Hi everyone,

A friend of mine has an '01 CLK 230 Kompressor. I was changing the plugs and oil for him yesterday and noticed that there is a slight oil leak around the inlet camshaft.

IIRC, there's a magnet/motor that moves the cam (variable timing?). Anyone know what the usual suspect of this leak is (seal?), and what is involved in repairing it?

Thanks,

Will

Hi Will

Saw this on an earlier post re the M111 engine.....any good ?

If the problem is as shown in the attached image then the solution was to replace the camshaft timing magnet as a unit. Basically what you can see in the middle of the picture with the loom connected. It has the (improved as far as I am aware) connector built into it which I believe is what causes the original problem.

Disconnect the wiring connector, remove the three allen bolts, remove the old magnet and install the new unit by reverse procedure.
I used an instant 'oil proof' gasket solution on the face of the new magnet before bolting it back on.

Since carrying out the above the area has had no further leaks and as you can imagine looks a lot cleaner than that now!
The item was not overly expensive which was a pleasant surprise.

Cheers Vij,

Yep, that's exactly the same leak as on my friend's car. I do wonder about the engine warning light and the high fuel consumption though, had a quick search earlier and it seems as though on some models the loom/lambda sensor becomes affected by this?

Hi Will,

Have a word with Ollie...apparently there is a modified bit of wiring that goes with this that stops the oil from travelling into the ECU via the cable. I was going to have mine changed last year as a precaution but he said at the time at the GTG that it wasn't required on my car.

Replacement Sensor

Hi could somebody let me know the best place to get one of these from, looked on euro car parts and GSF but they all look different of is this a main dealer part only ? mine is a the M111 engine too

Charlie

This is the part number for new one I fitted to my '98 C230K :A1190510077. Iirc, I purchased it from Germany, search Goolge.de with that number and double check it's suitable for your engine.

Bit the bullet earlier went to local stealer and got one part number A1110510177 £46.92 inc vat then had to buy the plastic bung for the middle seperatly A1119970186 £4.08 inc vat my only worry is do i need to change the bit that goes on the end of the camshaft as well or will it work with the sensor ??? I asked them but they didnt exactly inspire me with confidence they said 'should do if not come back' :(

The armature I think its known as will be fine. I gripped mine and removed m8 across the flats bolt and then cleaned off crud then replaced. I also got mine from the dealer and was sold the new bit of loom also to stop wicking up loom! But on closer inspection this does not fit my 1999 m111. Took that back and was told my engine does not suffer from this problem but its the later model, not sure there right but all is good now with no leak:-)

All fitted today found it easier to remove the thermostat housing as couldn't get the solenoid past the armature plate, cleaned it all up and refitted no leaks :) and on another note i changed the thermostat as mine was sticking open i noticed the one i got from GSF which was a whaler one had the mercedes part number on it and was identical to the original one except for they had drill they'd mercedes symbol off lol best £25 i spent already improved my mpg :thumb:
