MB E220 CDI W211 (2003
Hi,
i'm about to change oil for my car which is W211 220CDI 2002 and wonder which spec oil should have? IS it 229.5 or 229.51? Where can i find that info myself?

I do have Mobil 1 0w-40 and Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 (longlife) so i gotta find out which one to use.

AFAIK, there isn't a DPF on mine right?

And thank you all in advance!

Mobil 5w40 and shell helix 5w40 both are very good oils suitable and meet top mb spec for your vehicle

Hey, all!
Thank you for the replies!
I ended with up using Mobil 1 0w-40 as i had 4+1+1L of that laying around. But i used 5w-30 for the last .5L, hope that doesn't break stuff :)
But according to Which Oil for my Car? - Mobil? UK & Ireland
the recommended oil for my car is actually Mobil 1 5w-30.

In the VAG (VW/Audi) world Mobil 1 5w-30 was used on so called long life service intervals and it was a MUST on the pumpe dyse diesel engines.

So MB is more flexible when it comes to oil types.
But is Mobil 1's 5w-30 better oil than 0w-40?

IIRC, i did read on tdiclub.com that Mobil Delvac was an awesome oil! Is that correct?

As long as the oil meets the spec - forget the hype - the brand doesn't matter. AFAIK Lewis Hamilton seems to be tied in with mobil 1 - if that is true then he needs a cut to keep him and his entourage in Swiss splendour.

The oil viscosity if dependant on ambient temperature and not on car manufacturer's oil spec.

Therefore there is no MB-recommended viscosity as such.

Said that, most MB dealers use either 0w-40, 5w-40, or 5w-30 as generally suited viscosities for UK climate.

The issue may arise when an oil manufacturer chooses not to have all of the available viscosities submitted to MB for approval. The manufacturer might get MB approval for their 5w-30 oil but not bother with their 5w-40 oil, giving the false impression that one viscosity is recommended by MB but not the other.

OK, i've always thought Mobil 1 is one the better engine oils out there. Used it even for my cheaper VW Passat TDI 1999.

Thank you folks, good to know i can use whichever oil that meets 229.5 :)

Some oils may be better than others, I think the message here is that any oil meeting MB's very strict Spec Sheets is good enough... but within those oils Approved by MB, there is nothing to stop you from preferring one brand to another.

I would not worry about oil viscosity too much. The most important part of the engine oil is the additives used in the oil. They make up about 20- 30% of the total oil. As there are four main additive suppliers world wide the chances are your oil will contain one of their additive packages. As said earlier in the thread, so long as the oil meets the spec it is fine for your car regardless of which viscosity grade it is.

Lewis Hamilton is sponsored by Mobil - that wont be cheap and Mobil 1 users will be paying.

Not many of us are oil chemists but i am sure any oil chemist will tell you that using the cheapest oil that meets the merc spec for your car is completely ok

Why pay more?
