Oily smell inside car when idling

In picture 5 down you can see the pipe 216 from the feed pump, if you look carefully 222 is shown 3 times, but only once with the number

Yep I found this picture. Can I assume this is in the engine bay in front of the bulk head leading into the common rail?

I may be completely wrong so apologises. If you're are not sure then thanks anyway

Look under the inlet manifold and you will see a black plastic block that is attached to the fuel pump. There are three (or two) plastic lines going to this. I once had a 210 where the plastic block was not sealed to the pump block via a sealing ring and the smell was very apparent. Removed the block, replaced the ring and presto, no smell or leak. BTW the leak was minimal and hard to spot.

It is on the front of the engine . on the top.
you need to remove the engine cover to see it

Can assure you the engine cover has been removed and a close examination undertaken. Need to locate the fuel pump and carry out checks as suggested by Mr Walker.

It is becoming more apparent that the smell is diesel, though its difficult to nail it.

Thanks for everyones help. I obiviously need to get this attended to soon.

any news?

Any update on this?

I have a similar problem of a strange smell comming into the car. I did hav a leaky injector which has now been fixed but a smell is still there when you first turn the AC on its like a damp smell but then is constant strange smell i really cant describe what it smells like.

A friend said it could be the heater matrix.

c220 CDI.

Diesel fumes can linger for some time, I would have though that if you turned the heat up to max foe some time it may get rid of it, The air con people do have things for getting rid of the smell

ive just checked the pollen filter an it appeared to be black and stank of the leaky injector. why didnt i check this earlier  .

I will replace and try again.

is there other filters i could check i take it the pollen filter is the one above the battery on the righthand side. is there a filter inside the car aswell?

Here is the layout of your heater, read down the list and you will see all of the filters

I did not mention the filters as the other guy in the postings had

Update

Been on holiday so only had the car in a Bosch Service station today.

Remember symptoms are an oily smell inside car and in engine compartment, which is clearly now identified as a diesel smell.

Thought using Bosch Service station was a good idea since its a Bosch fuel injection system. Anyway, they claim the leak is from the high pressure pump and that this would require replacement - quoted £700 plus 3 hours labour!!!. They only lifted the engine cover did not dismantle anything. Told them not to bother. No charge since only a visual inspection undertaken.

Phoned MB and they claim it is highly unlikely that the pump has failed, more likely a fuel line leak. Asked about a goodwill repair if the pump is the issue, in light of the fact only 3 months out of warranty. Reluctantly agreed this might be possible. Car booked in for diagnosis at MB tomorrow.

Anyone had experience of a diesel fuel pump failure ? The car is driving perfectly - other than the unpleasant smell.

It is not impossible for it to fail.

I still suspect the injectors are leaking but it is difficult to say without seeing it.

The injectors are on the top of the engine and the leak is from the front of the engine, below where pump is

If the pump has failed would the car not display other symptoms ? Is the cost appropriate?

Had a closer look at the fuel pump and it seems to be showing signs of corrosion. This has probably been leaking for some time. Suspect when visiting MB in the morning there will be a bit of a debate as to " cars out of warranty sir "

Has anyone managed to get a goodwill repair and how exactly should I go about asking for one. Warranty expired two and a half months ago. Is it MBUK who I need to argue with. Is the repair carried out then a discount agreed or can the discussion and debate roll on for some time.

Any advice would be appreciated

Write a nice letter saying that this has been an ongoing problem that has proved difficult to locate, and ask if it is possible for some help towards the cost, Just stay nice and point out all of the facts
