Only 17 months for this!! :(

Yes he did...but go back a bit to 30 seconds into the video clip and you can see what happened before the side swipe.

Yes the cyclist is clearing calling the driver a ****** or somthing while stopping in front of the bus, but exactly why? as I read earlier in the thread the bus driver cut him up. you make it out like its the cyclist just randomly started shouting at the driver...

(this debate could go on forever :D)

Karl, there are two videos, I am talking about the one in this clip:

BBC News - Bus driver jailed after driving into cyclist

It shows the roundabout where the incident started (at 30 seconds in).

Ah, hadnt seen that video :)

Still doesnt change my opinion. Not a week goes by without a person stepping out infront of you, car turning left without indicating, bus drivers speeding up when coming out of a junction etc happening to me.

People forget that there is absolutly nothing protecting a cyclist unlike buses, lorries, cars. I would suggest people cycle to work just the once to see what happens every single day.

BBC News - TfL 'failing' to keep cyclists safe at King's Cross

I'm not sure what your opinion is, but if it is that the bus should not have side swiped the cyclist...then we are agreed.

But I do not agree that the bus did anything wrong at the roundabout, and therefore the cyclist got annoyed for absolutely no reason...imo.

55 minutes in

At 55 seconds in, all I can see is the second part where he makes contact.

In both of the clips on this post, I cannot see the cyclist being cut up on a roundabout. All I can see is a bus which clearly indicated into a lane ahead of a cyclist which was clear, and then a cyclist try and get passed the bus on the OS.

It's obvious the cyclist had a problem with the bus doing this, I can only assume a chip on the shoulder, and decided to make a meal of it.

The bus driver has done nothing wrong up until the point he knocked the cyclist off.

Bus driver should have got out and battered him instead.

No one makes anyone cycle though. There are buses, subways etc in London. People make that choice and IMHO take a massive risk to their own safety. It's like smoking, everyone knows the risks but do it anyway.

I can't see that bit in the clip below... what time does it occur in the clip?

At the time where the bus changes lane and forces a vehicle in that lane (in this case the cyclist) to move to his right to avoid a collision.

Okay,

As a Bristol cyclist and cycle commuter this is my 2 penneth;

No provocation in the world should have resulted in a bus being deliberately driven into a cyclist.

Real world;

As a cyclist, I rarely have had any altercation with a vehicle in around 30 years of cycling for leisure and commuting

Cyclists are the most vulnerable road users with very little protection.

There will always be good cyclists and bad cyclists.

There will always be good drivers and bad drivers

The guy in the bus is an idiot and the law has penalised him fairly. I would rather see him get GBH and a good sentace for GBH, than watch a CPS lawyer try for Manslaughter and lose, resulting in said idiot going free on a technicality.

Buses driver very close, generally speaking, my preference is to overtake and get ahead of them and be able to make my presence felt on the road, especially on multiple lanes where I may need to cross lanes (as this guy looks like he is doing). IMHO, he has been aggressive in his riding, but rightly so - That is a dodgy piece of road and you need to be tooling it to make the lane changes.

The only altercations I have had were with a van driver that deliberately knocked me off my bike, resulting in my breaking the van drivers jaw (after he kicked me when I was down). Luckily a Police car witnessed the entire incident, the Police officer agreed with my statement of self defence and the van driver lost his job - The Police/CPS decided not to proceed with the prosecution.

And a bus that decided to turn left into a filter as it overtook me on a dual carraigeway, forcing me into the filter as well, even though I wanted to go straight on - I broke the buses door when I punched it, forcing the driver to miss his turn as he swerved when he realised I was there. His excuse "sorry mate, I did not see you".

So because of dangerous drivers not bothering to drive their vehicles safety eg, not bothering to look in their mirrors when changing lanes, risking the life of other road users cyclists - not to mention Motorcyclists! cyclists should accept that their journeys are completely their own risks in the same way cancer is to smokers?

ridiculous.

You have a third clip?

The bus has entered the lane well ahead of the cyclist. The cyclist can see this and continues on his course without slowing as any car would have done. Because the bike is narrow he can pull along side the bus...and some how blame the bus...he's being a numpty...imo.

Must be.

I can only see this in the clip I've seen.

How you can interpret it any other way is beyond me...

Some of the opinions on this topic are staggering;

FACT: A bloke in a bus deliberately ran into another road user, there is a video and a judge agreed that the driver of the bus was to blame.

It could have been; car, motorbike or anything road bound that he deliberately ran into. However, in this case it was a cyclist who was injured. A motorbike/scooter rider could have been even more seriously injured - should it have been a motorbike or scooter.

No matter what the provocation, the bus driver has no right to react in this manner and neither does anyone else.

I am hoping that some of you are being very tongue in cheek in your comments, otherwise this really is a sad day for society and for MB owners.

Lets leave the 'we hate cyclists' mentality.

I think all are agreed the bus driver was wholly in the wrong for what he did. And, again, no matter what the provocation he should not have done it...in a perfect world.

The cyclist, who caused the whole episode, learnt, to his cost, that the red mist can have a very serious consequence, and it would be better not to test people.

No - I just interpreted this clip correctly.

The cyclist shouldn't have to slow down to give way to a vehicle barging into his lane from the nearside. And if the bus was well ahead of the cyclist then why did the cyclist have to swerve to his right ?

The bus driver wouldn't have tried it on if it had been a large van or a lorry in that lane.

You are obviously a non-cyclist.

The cyclist, who caused the whole episode *IYHO*, learnt, to his cost, that the red mist can have a very serious consequence, and it would be better not to test people.

So, under provocation with or without intent; it is okay to injure someone or to potentially kill someone.

Are you sure about this?

Lets put this one on you, extreme example;

You have a 'todo' with a 38ton truck - eveyone believes that they are 'in the right'. But there is nothing *actually* conclusive regarding the entire history of the incident - just a snippit from a filter move to a deliberate act. Truck driver see's red and decides to run into your car carrying your 2 small kids. 2 small kids killed in deliberate act using the truck.

From the Truck drivers POV, in your world;

The MB driver, who caused the whole episode *allegedly*, learnt, to his cost, that the red mist can have a very serious consequence, and it would be better not to test people.

The cyclist was clearly ahead....IMHO. And there fore the option of using the right hand lane and the right of way is his. Everyone else should wait. Only thing he did not do was indicate intent - pretty bad, but allot of drivers don't indicate.

As a cyclist, if I want to take an entire lane, primary position, I will do if I feel that it is the safest thing to do. I.e. make people overtake rather than try and squeeze by. Or if I am making a turn very soon - amazing the amount of drivers that try and overtake you as you indicate and take the lane to turn right for example.

Aside some previous histrory between the bus driver and cyclist, I see no 'real' fault with what the cyclist is doing. he has the right of way.

At the 30 second mark the bus was ahead of the bike by a long way.

The cyclist was moving quickly and caught the slower bus, who was already half in the lane. In normal circumstances a car would have slowed and allowed the bus in. The cyclist did not slow, did not observe, and used his size to squeeze beside the bus and cause what happened after this.

I have said, as we all have that the bus driver was wrong to hit the cyclist...and is paying the price.

The cyclist was stupid to assume the bus driver would not react. This does not mean I'm condoning the actions of the driver...but on the road I'd rather stay alive, than prove how right I am.

You are obviously a non-cyclist.

A larger vehicle, positioned where the cyclist was at 30 seconds, would have slowed down, and would not have interpreted the bus as barging anywhere.

This is not about cyclists and the rest. The cyclist (yes me too), was wrong.
