Picked up my new c63 coupe from mb birmingham yesterday. Near side front tyre reads inner 2.6mm centre 5.3 and outer 3.8mm. Should this have been replaced before sale or does the inner and outer wear matter less than the centre? Spoke to the dealer who assures me that this is the way the car geometry is setup and as long as the centre reading is above 4mm then they deem it satisfactory. Any thoughts?

So the inner is just 1mm off of being at the legal limit. I reckon you will need to replace the fronts very soon.
I'd get the geometry checked at Wheels in Motion too.

As long as the Centre 3/4s of the tyre is above 1.6mm the tyre and there are know cords showing out of that area the tyre is completley legal.

Thats not to say id drive on it

My front tyres wore on the inside edge.

I went to MB in Inverness where they checked the geometry, it was all within limits, the chief mechanic recommended fitting some bolts with flats on them to the lower arms.

Since I've had this done, the front tyres now wear evenly across the tread and the handling remained as it was before, still good.

I'd recommend this mod to be done, and a new set of front boots too, personally.

The car should be delivered with legal tyres. Not borderline ones - cheap skates.

Thanks, the offside front is 6.2 mm on the inner and 6.6 on the outer and 8.2at the centre so it has been replaced fairly recently. Is it the centre depth that controls the replacement timing?

As merc85 says, it has to be above 1.6mm for 75% of the tread area for it to be legal.

The minimum depth (in your case 2.6mm) is the real figure.

When it wears by another mm, the fact that the other two depths are legal doesn't matter at all, your tyre will be on 1.6mm.

The law says, you need a minimum of 1.6mm for 75% of the tread around the full circumference of the tyre in the central portion, as long as the cords aren't showing the area currently at 2.6mm could be bald and the tyre would still be legal, that said, I'd still change it, if it were me.

If you'd noticed it before the sale I'm sure they would have replaced it, now they've got your money it's a different matter.
I'm picking up my 2013 C63 next week, I got the MB dealer to fit a new windscreen due to a small chip, repaint the front bumper, take care of a couple of minor marks and small dent and refurb the front seat. It's amazing what they will do to get a sale, the car had already been fitted with two new rear tyres and new rear disks and pads for its B service. If I'd noticed any of these things a week after purchase I'd imagine they would have given me the finger.

Yes, sorry, you're quite correct, I didn't make my point clearly enough.

I meant to say that, to me, if any part of the tyre is past 1.6mm it's gone. Having said that, I normally change my tyres at 2.5-3.0mm anyway especially on something with circa 500bhp.

Thanks for all the comments. As I said, I spoke to MB Birmingham today who said that as long as the centre reading is above 4 mm then they and the MOT'ers are happy. I, like you, have my reservations and have asked another dealer that I know for their opinion and I shall be calling back on Monday to take it further.

More interestingly, who has been eurocharged and preferably cat gutted in Surrey so I can get a quick comparisson?! Atb, Steven

I had the same argument with MB Oxford. They replaced 3 tyres but would not replace the 4th. They said they will not sell a car with less than 4.1mm across 75% of the tyre and mine was spookily enough exactly 4.1.

As your dealer said 4mm on the centre of the tyre I would recommend a quick phone call. Maybe phone as a prospective buyer and ask the question about tyres ;)

Thanks Ian, sounds familiar. Both rears are new and one front nearly new so I think they are trying it on. I agree with them that the tyre is acceptable but at current tread depth I will need to replace it quite soon, one of the reasons for choosing main dealer is that this shouldnt be the case.

Simon, the speil states 4mm over 75% of the centre...
