Power car polishing / buffing / waxing

Apologies if this ihas been covered before but what would be the recommended Kit ?

Is the Sonus DAS kit at $179 preferrable to the Ultimate kit with Lake Country Pads at the same price.

The Sonus kit looks better value to me but I may be missing something.

Thanks

Robin

Sorry to be a pest, whilst you are answering Robin's questions. Have you heard of one of these contraptions and if so are they lighter than a 110 volt transformer

***The PC 7424 has a powerful motor for its size, yet it pulls a scant 3.7 amps at 110 volts. If you don’t have a garage, you can run the PC 7424 off of your car battery using a 750+ watt power inverter***.

We do have an external power point so price is not the issue, it is an issue solely of weight and conveinance. Is this 'inverter' thingie lighter than the transformer?

Thanks again,
John

Yes and no, they admitted to that they had supplied some sub-standard pads and were sourcing a different supplier. They kindly agreed to replace the pads I had FOC and I ordered 10 extra to make it worth their while shipping them, they did not send the correct number of pads but never mind. The new pads are much, much better.

The machine is easy enough to use but then I am a big bloke, I dare say a petite lady would find it difficult to reach the roof and quite tiring to use after a while.

I have an inverter but it converts from 12v to 240v so you would still need a transformer unless you can get 110v inverters.

There has been much discussion on use of inverters on many threads, some people have had success others have had problems. The set up I recommend seems to be fool proof.

The roof issue is important, I actually use an old stool to stand on, I have also used an old beer crate this really helps.

I have not got the Sonus pads as these have only just become available but I am sure I saw somewhere they are guarenteed for 10 uses. I would definatly go for the Sonus setup, the chaps at Autopia generally know what they are doing and if you read the How to guide on the PC they use the Sonus system.

Autopia Customer Service

I was just on the Meguiars UK Forum and this thread submission was put on (14/9/04), there are a few other examples of praise and no complaints. It would seem we are in pretty safe hands in using Autopia as a source for the PC.

Hi to all

You may have noticed that I recently purchased a Porter Cable random orbital polisher from autopia-carcare and was so pleased with the service and speed of delivery I received from David Bynon at Autopia.

Anyway, things went slightly awry when the PC started to vibrate really badly. It was so bad that I felt like I was using a Jack Hammer and it was really hard to use on a setting higher than 3. (fellow users will understand) I have used polishers in this past and felt that it couldn't just be my inexperience with this particular product. I emailed David and he promptly replied apologizing for the problem and gave me a few suggestions. Unfortunately none of them worked

I bought the Lake Country brand of pads when I in fact wanted the Sonus versions. That was 100% my fault and I accidentally ordered the wrong ones. Anyway, I literally couldn't get to grips with the PC so I asked Autopia how much it would cost to have Sonus pads shipped. This was in the hope that the Sonus pads wouldn't vibrate so much.

I then got an email from David Ostroff at Autopia informing me that the PC shouldn't vibrate like that and just to be safe they were sending me a BRAND NEW PC complete with the Sonus Pad kit FREE OF CHARGE They felt that it had inconvenienced me enough and that it was the "right thing to do".

I take my hat off to Autopia for their excellent service, support and total friendliness toward me - nothing was too much trouble. All I can ask is that you spread this news to your fellow detailing enthusiasts and ask that they buy their PC and pads from Autopia.

They deserve to get the extra business.

Many thanks

Ernie

I guess we can be re-assured by this example of customer service to a UK customer.

:D :D Your not going to believe this, but the poliisher I was about to purchase vibrates terribly.... :) Could you please send me a replacement? :D

Seriously though your latest post speaks volumes about the customer relations of this firm. They deserve a big pat on the back.

I registered with the Autopia Forum and recieved a 10% discount code as a welcome

Talk about favouritism :) I have just managed to register and only received a 'welcome'. My next move is to try and make sure I purchase my items correctly and make sure the credit's goes to 'Koicarp11' :)

Glad to hear of your 10%

Another couple of questions before I order.

How many of you got a 10% introductory offer and did it come with the welcome message?

What sort of plug comes with the polisher?
If it is a 110volt or US plug has anyone changed it?

I don't want 'the boss' trying to keep moving the transformer, my plan would be to place the transformer by the outside power point and run an extension from the transformer to the polisher. Is this feasible?

I do hope I am not the only one that did not get an introductory offer!

Regards to you all,
John

Hi Aletank,
Thank you very much for your reply. I have tried a couple of times to join the mailing list (just tried again) I keep getting the same message.........

Please Please Please can you use my link and then put in your discount code, if you get the discount code and surf around after using the link my poor brownie points are lost

So get the discount code then re-enter the site using my link and then insert this when you purchase, this way I get the brownie point.

I am definatly going to get my free polishing pads by the end of the year, as you can see I am very goal orientated. ;)

After all your research I would not dream of doing anything other than that.

When pleading for my discount I made sure that I said 'goldfish11 said I could have 25% off :)

Will be done,

The deed has finally been done.
On Monday I finally ordered a Sonus Kit plus 4 extra pads (two grey, two blue) at a total cost of

$219.75 less discount =
$186.79 plus postage of
$72 made a grand total of
$258.79

I have no idea yet of the exact sterling figure ;) , but I am typing this whilst the 'boss' is out. I have also ordered the twin transformer, extension lead, and spare plug!!

Last night I received an e-mail stating that my package left the US at 11-15am, so it is well on the way here.

All I have to do now is convince the wife that it will be easy to use, and I will very kindly personally supervise her, having read how to 'expertly' detail a vehicle  :D

Thanks goldfish11 I made sure I 'double' mentioned you as the person that referred me to the site, and thank you everyone for your help and most importantly DISCOUNT information.

Thanks very much,
John

looks like about £135.

I'm warming up to the idea of all this power polishing stuff, especially with the cheap dollar atm.

I finally got to use mine again over th last two nights with the new Sonus pads, the new pads are miles better than the original ones, much more durable.

I applied Auto Glum's new 'Supreme' polish (specially designed and formulated for dark colours and water based paints), took about 20mins to apply, left it on all night and day and buffed off last night using a new, clean pad. I then applied Extra Gloss Protection, took about 10 mins and again will leave all night and all day before buffing again tonight. Hopefully that will last out the winter.

I can honestly say that the Supreme polish is one of if not the best I have ever used, very easy to apply and leaves very little powder residue. The resulting gloss is magnificent. I fully recommend it.

Thanks for the conversion 'Shude'

We will be using up ourNTX then I will have to listen to everyone's recommendations.

My biggest 'hate' is getting the polish onto black trim or rubber, it is a devil to get off.

The 'stretched limo' (Sprinter) is going to be the challenge. I don't suppose 'the boss' will be able to reach above the windows.

I will have to suggest she parks it close to our perimeter garden wall :) . Then she can climb up onto the wall and get to the parts that otherwise would not be reached.

Regards,
John

God she must love you. ;)

'She' just found out how much it is all costing!!!

I told her it can be her early Christmas present!!!

I just can't understand why she didn't think it was funny?? Now she has just given me a cup of cold coffee with no sugar???

What am I doing wrong?? :)

John

Blooming heck!!!!
The transformer just turned up and it must weigh two tons at least!!!! I purchased the double one from Screwfix and it is 'slightly' heavy. :)

I've told wife to sit on the floor and drag it, I suppose I'm lucky she can't lift it, and hit me on the head with it :) Next job will be getting a small trolley made for it, then she can pull it about. :)

I have my hydrotherapy later on, I best be careful that she doesn't make me carry it :)

(Don't know how I will manage to wrap it in Christmas paper)

Bye for now,
John

Jimmy,

I heard Auto G were launching the new Supreme Polish. Did you get it from Hellfords or somewhere else. Would be very interested in seeing results. Any pictures??

Wow - Dollar exchange rate is amazing

Just bought a load of stuff from Autopia, (a Christmas present to myself) I used the paypal option and got an exchange rate of $1.883 per £.

Means you you can get the Porter Cable with pads etc for less than £100. I even bought some P21S Concours Wax which you can get in the UK (a sort of zymol level product made in Germany)

Cost in UK - £27.50

Cost in USA $31.95 (this resulted in an additional $4.00 postage on my order) = $35.95 Which equates to £19.14 :) so Autopia buy the stuff in Germany send it to the USA, I ship it back and save nearly £10

If you have not got a Porter Cable now is the time to buy, the £ is at a 12 year high against the $. Buy quickly as the yanks are going to be in big trouble when it comes to place their next orders for all these excellent European car care products.

Oh by the way I got my free pads becuse you nice chaps used my links :D
Thank you to you all, and please please please keep using the links :) Hopefully I will get some more free pads by Christmas 2005 :D
