Power car polishing / buffing / waxing

Dont know if they work or not but seem a cheaper/better bet than 110v builders transformer so I have ordered one. If interested I will let you know if it works. ;) and no need to change/re-wire the plug.

Good luck, and will you make up your own extension lead?

John

Update on transformer....

It would seem that the power adapter that I purchased is only rated at 45watts with the Porter Cable drawing a lot more not sure exactly how much but obviously a lot more than 45 watts. It was the term VA that threw me as it seems to be a reference to the wattage, so without checking first I used the PC for about 10 minutes before the transformer blew. If anyone gets one from this site get the higher rated ones which dont work out much cheaper than a builders transformer which I have bought for at a pretty reasonable £40. The only benefit is you dont have to change the plug.

Lesson learnt.... ;) check power consumption first.. :o

Oh and by the way, I' very pleased with the results of my polishing too. :)

Take your VA (Volt Ampere) and multiply it by 0.625 for an approximate wattage, for an AC circuit (cosine of phase shift). For direct current (DC) VA are equivalent to Watts.

Mini Transformers

Be Careful, there are loads of threads on this on the Autopia websites, the problem is that the PC can peak at much higher wattage. Hence the need for a big site transformer. You are best off just getting this to start with from Screwfix at least you are safe then.

An other issue is some people have used these things and it has caused the PC to burn out!.

If I was you I would just play it safe and go for a Screwfix transformer.

I have just finished polishing the new car its a black 2004 sl500 the product i used was GLARE Professional Polish.

I used this product on my previous sl and was amazed how long it lasts (about 2 years) you have to clean and polish out any scratches on the car first this is a top coat and you apply it with a orbital polisher the shine is amazing water beads off and you dont need to wax ever again !!

you can also apply it to the glass and it has the same affect as rain ex

I found out about the product from my local body shop when i enquired about how to keep clean a black car

Rain ex was either a love hate product. Putting wax on the windscreen is not something I personally would ever recommend, but each to their own.

A nice advert for the product though.

I think rain-x or any other kind of wax is great if it gets on well with the screenwash :) . If the screenwash reacts to it then you're sunk.

Might see you around, as there aren't many C43 (Obsidian Black) around. My better half drives it a lot so you might get a strange reaction if you show out.

Read this thread several times, and not yet got around to buying a Porter Cable - been waiting for a special occasion, so the cost can be justified to my better half!! Well Christmas and birthday are both approaching fast!!

Pricing various bits and pieces up, and IIRC, the Sonus pad kit is the one to go for, but which - "DAS" or "SFX"?

Would appreciate your thoughts.

Many thanks.

Contacted Porta Cable UK about the 7424 Auto Polisher and they responded as follows:

sorry we cannot get a CE mark on that power tool

Anyone know if this has any impact on safety?

Hi Bobby,
I don't understand your question. We use this polisher and are very happy with it. Are you suggesting there might be a safety issue?

John

Porta Cable UK have told me that they can't supply one because of the lack of the CE mark. I'm not sure whether the lack of CE mark is a safety thing or something else, and hence the reason I'm curious. It may be nothing at all.

I've been impressed by all the comments on the Porta Cable, and I think all without exception have been positive. Dropping hints to my wife as we speak!!

Hi Bobby,
I can understand your caution and it would be so easy to say don't worry about it. I wonder if the reason is because the Porter Cable is 110 volts?

Bye for now,
John

John - That was my thinking too.

CE is a safety marking and can apply to all goods sold in the EU. It is not only electrical items, but IIRC it is to do with electrical emittance and safety.

The voltage is irrelevent, my mobile and desk phones are rated and they are 3.6V, even my spectacles are CE rated.

Maybe the PC just hasn't been submitted for test due to cost or maybe it's not double insulated.
Personally if it is electrically safe and works Ok then I wouldn't worry.

;) All you ever wanted to know about 'CE' markings but were afraid to ask!

CE Markings

All goobly gook to me ;)

John
