Power car polishing / buffing / waxing

Any one have opinions on the Halfords mains unit? I have a black car with a world or swirls! Would love a portacable, but wifey just let me spend a small fortune on a new PC, and think my finances are going to be throttled for a while :(

Paul

the halfords jobbie would be v.good at buffing off waxes - no good at all (relatively) at swirls - best idea is to get somebody experienced with a PC to have a go (roughly cost=cost of PC) and keep it swirl free - other than getting rid of swirls (&chips etc.) there is no real reason for having a PC and you can do some real damage without experience

Do it by hand!

I did mine today by hand. I sweat buckets, but think it was worth it.

I used to really enjoy cleaning and polishing my car, but I have RSI in both shoulders and the quack said I should lay off the polishing motion (although he said I should go swimming :) )

Think I may just have to convince she who holds the purse strings to let me buy a portacable.

Paul.

Ebay have a couple of Porter Cable 7424 units with polishing kits at £144 inc postage. Seems like a good deal ( I already have a 110v generator) so I just bought one. Search for Porter Cable 7424

This is the chap from Ebay, Mods one for you?

Not associated with the guy, but I just bought my Porta from him, and he offers discounts to clubs like ours?

Anyhoo, here is the email he sent me...

"I stock all the Sonus pads

SFX 6" Pads
DAS 7" Pads (inc in this kit)
SFX 4" Spot Pads

If you let me know which ones you would like I shall get a price together for you

I am more than happy to arrange a MB discount on the PC and full range of Poorboys Detailing products and also be on hand to help and advice with any detailing questions and of course offer Group Buys and Specials

Have a good day!

If you go for Autopia, register with them. The do a regular BIGSAVE offer which gives you 20% off. It still works out cheaper than the UK. They sometimes do a discount for international orders, may be worth dropping them an email.

Hi.Folks
I brought a random orbital polisher 240v for £30,from Halfords no less ??.
Along with a Meguiars car care kit £24,the polisher is a well made and good value.save yourself time and money.
Happy new year

Pineer,

How did you get on with the Halfords polisher or have you not used it yet?

I'm interested how the cheaper polishers perform before I go spending lots of money on a Porta Cable.

Who on earth came up with the name Black and Decker Scumblaster?
Sounds like a gun used by Charles Bronson.

I purchased a rotary and got excellent results without any mishaps.

I use a rotary (£19.95 from fleabay) with no problems. In fact it's the ubiquitous 180 mm pad type with a powerful motor that is commonly used for sanding. As long as it has adjustable speeds and you use a low abrasive polish on the softer foam pad (£5 or so from Machine Mart)
Sorry but importing something like the Porta from America at great cost is nuts.

Hello,

I am a bit confused, I want to remove some pretty stubborn swirl marks, but do I buy the DAS system or the SFX system? One is 5" and one is 6" it seems? should i buy the swirlbuster foam polishing pad and swirlbuster polish?

Thanks.

SFX pads have more bite than the DAS pads. You can buy kits with a few pads in. I'm not sure what polish you're looking at, but it all depends how bad your swirls are. You should always start with the least abrasive combination and work up if it doesn't get the swirls out.

Thanks Chris,

I bought:

Sonus Der Wunder Mitt SON-DWMITT 1 8.00
Sonus SFX Polisher Kit SON-SFXPOL-KIT 1 210.00
Sonus SFX-3 Final Finish SON-430-8 1 9.00
Polish
Sonus SFX-1 Restore SON-410-8 1 10.00
Polish
Sonus SFX-2 Enhance Swirl SON-420-8 1 10.00
Remover
Der Wunder Towel Trio SON-DWTRIO 1 28.75

Did everyone get an extension cord so the distance from the transformer to the buffer is longer? Or do you just carry the transformer around the car?

Extention lead.

Okay so you got an american extension lead shipped over?

We bought the transformer, plus extension lead from Screwfix. My wife uses this equipment and the transformer is no lightweight, so we also bought a light sack trolley for the transformer :o :o

Good luck,
John
