Hi all,
Thinking about buying a used unit off eBay (2011 unit) for £165.00. Assuming it hasn't had a recent update, does anyone know if I will immediately be charged for the most recent map upgrades when I plug into my computer? If so, how much that would cost? I'm wondering if I'd be better off buying a new unit, which presumably would have the most recent upgrades.
Thank you,
Jon

You won't (can't) be charged till they've got your details! What happens is that the unit is scanned and they suggest what upgrades are needed and what the cost is and it's then your decision.

At £165, you wouldn't be cheaper buying an new unit unless it was substantially discounted as I think a map upgrade is about £65 and from memory, Safety cameras cost around £20.

It's a bit of a long shot, but the first upgrade is free from the point at which a new unit is first registered and it might,,,might just be that yours was never registered, although they may well put a time limit from manufacture on such upgrades; worth trying, though.

Let us know how you get on.

For what it's worth, my son's Becker is PIN locked. Has the seller unlocked it? De-registered it or not registered it all?
Being a 2011 model, it will be the 4gb version and not the later 8gb model.
Once plugged in, with a new unit, there are options to register and purchase updates and update plans; they don't update maps very often (lots of complaints about this on the internet).
Personally, I would only buy a used unit if I was satisfied completely that I could access/use it AND it wasn't stolen…they are upwards of £300 new and easily removed from the holder, hence the PIN lock facility.
