It was much worse than I realised! I only saw a few 5l cans being filled (though more than one person in the same camera frame doing it was visible) on Channel 4 News last night and went for some photos of that for you and found what I posted. The police should be prosecuting. Fuel being gathered there is much more than is permitted.
It’s just the great British public, the very ones our politicians have so much faith in to behave appropriately and do the right thing.

"Fuel shortage" has always been a self-fulfilling prophecy, just like a run on the bank.

And the one announcement that no government should ever make, is that "there's no need to panic-buy" something, because this is certain to induce immediate mass hysteria....

Hi , we need 100,000 hgv drivers and BJ feels that 5000 extra will solve the problem.

Drivers delivering petrol have to be certified (cannot remember correct qualification)

Temperatory Visas to get hgv drivers back , not sure but £65 may help.

UK is in a ticking time bomb !

The government and the media should be ashamed of causing the fuel panic. How many times does panic buying have to be initiated before they learn to shut the F*** up about shortages and let things take their natural course. It couldn't possibly be worse.

My son is on the M1 right now, driving from London to York, having travelled down to pick up his dream car - a Porsche 911 4S. He doesn't have enough fuel to get home. I can see the motorway being littered with cars that have run out.

Hi , really sorry about your son's problems but I don't think we will be able to go to on our wedding anniversary next week.

You will.

It happened before, on several occasions... panic buying empies petrol stations, but eventually all those who brimmed their tanks drive their cars back home and park them. The petrol stations' storage tanks then fill-up again... in a few days it will all be back to normal. Until the next scare...

Blaming the government and the media for the fuel shortage isn't totally fair IMO. They are reporting a situation that brings out the worst in people.
The majority of blame lies with the selfish and greedy motorist pulling in to top up when they don't need it.
As for those who have been filling up jerry cans, I have nothing but anger.

I liken it to the previous emptying of supermarket shelves of toilet rolls and pasta by stupid idiots who think only about themselves.

No one can deny the stupidity of the public in response to a don't panic statement but the government and the media know that the public are stupid and what the response will be, it's utterly predictable. Therefore the wisest course of action would be for them to say nothing or just keep denying there is a shortage. If any politician still thinks they can influence the public to heed a no panic statement then they are living in cloud cuckoo land.

I agree. But the media are there to report news. And bad news sells more copies. It's a fact of life.
This is just what they want, to report a shortage and sit back and watch a drama turn into a crisis.
But I get your point.
