So haven’t taken the old battleship out in a while & was instructed by the Lady of the residence had business to attend to in Birmingham…

Absolutely beautiful weather air-con on all the way & mainly all motorway driving with about 20% local driving once in Brummie…
Enthusiastic driving on motorway May have nudged a tad over 68mph🚨🚨🚨

Forgot to mention car is 2007 s211 E280cdi…

Round trip figures:
187 miles
38mph Average speed
34.2mpg

To be fair we where 4up with loads of shopping & it was a lot of town driving start/stop with air-con running as well…

Here’s mine, all motorway miles down to Southampton, 7 days parked up, then filled up when the fuel warning light came on coming home. It’s probably the best I’ve seen in 5 years. 2lt petrol

Agreed on the modern stuff…
But on my 16yr old battleship with almost 200k on the clock it does make a fair bit of difference in my humble opinion…

Air con running doesn't mean much these days though.

OK, but my 2005 CLK on 150,000 miles could get up to 68mpg driving like Miss Daisy and switching the air con off made absolutely no difference whatsoever, and that would have been 16 years old at the time too.

68mpg you say….
Was that a misprint??
I’ve driven some frugal stuff in my time but I’ve yet to average that sort of number…
Over what distance did you achieve that?

No misprint, CLK220CDi, tried various times and switching air con off made no noticable differencs.

Fair play…I’ve always had 3-4mpg difference with having it on/off…
Maybe just my driving style…

Or use it at least once a week was the official advice when I was at Audi/VW. On my Alfa you cant turn it off......well you can but it will turn it back on if it "thinks" it should be on!!!

I'm not convinced that mpg comparisons mean a great deal. With so many factors having a noticeable effect on consumption it's not something that means a lot, until it changes dramatically. I've recorded 40mpg at an average of 70mph on a 200 mile run in my old CLK230K and similar mpg at an average speed of around 60mph in my C350, both of which are petrol. But I've also recorded a lot worse in my C350 on long runs. Ambient temperature, heaviness of right foot, number and steepness of hills, along with countless other things can make significant differences. The only thing that matters is how the owner/driver feels about the consumption.

I genuinely posted just to get a gist on how similar cars would compare…
Fully understand there would be countless differences on any given journey…
