Recommend a decent socket set?

Can you get one without the imperial sockets, if so go for that as you will never use them.

..Unless you need to work on anything American, or old lawn mowers, or old British cars..

Very interesting Nick, all for roughly the same price as the Halfords set too!

Just the convenience of the Warranty thing to consider now. Hmmmmmm ( Sound of brain cogs rattling ) :)

A warranty on a socket set... Ok...

The most important thing is a good fit of the sockets and being fair, the Halfords professional ones do that, I have a few sockets and they are good.

I have great comfort that the sockets I bought more than 10 years ago are still covered......ahhh maybe that's your point :D

The only set i ever had ( yes a crap cheapo set ) Had numerous bits break. I take it from what you are saying is, any decent quality set should last a lifetime. That said maybe i am over-thinking it a bit.

Price is important to me as i don't have loads of dosh to spend, but i don't want a crappy set that will be like my last.

You never know when you will need a socket that can be hammered on over a worn or butchered hexagon. Every fastener on my Bentley is Imperial, and the small BA sized electrical fasteners can still be found in current use. Most of my sockets are Britool hexagon drive and date from the 1930s, even the ratchets are still fine, and I have a Halford's set from the 1970s which still is OK, although I have split the 11/16 AF hammering it on over locking wheel nuts.

....and if you buy the Halfords stuff, get yourself registered on Quidco, register your debit / credit card and you'll get another 4.5% off.

Depending on your view of Lidl quality they have a £35 socket set on offer next week.
I would expect the Halfords to be better though .

You may also find a cheap stubby 1/4 drive handy for the fiddly bits - coil and EZL bolts on W126 and OVP bolts on W124 E280 in my case most recently, but lots of other instances. Much easier with long extensions than a bigger 3/8 or 1/2 drive (but only in addition to those).

I have 2 sets of Halfords Socket sets and they are good quality and the lifetime guarantee means if like me you snap in half your 3\8ths flexible joint they just change it there and then no questions.

I have a right collection of Halfords pro / advanced tools, great quality. A rachet packed up a bit back, wandered in and they replaced it with no questions, i had had it for approx 10yrs, so very happy..

Great, seems like they got a sale on allready. What do you think of this ?

Halfords | Halfords Advanced Professional 150 Piece Socket & Ratchet Spanner Set

The Halfords professional range does indeed look very good.
Who would have believed its made in China??

We get Chinese instruments at work and now the better models are fantastic.. The Chinese are no longer "coming on"..
They are here and thru the door !!!

I bought those Halfords ratchets at £40 half price and they seem to be really good quality
