Sl60

As talbir says if AMG themselves say they did not put in an SL60 engine why would one assume otherwise. Compare your engine to the photo of the Avantgarde one. I know it is an earlier car with different caps etc. but they are clearly not the same, not least in that the 2 MB wordmarks have been replaced by AMG ones on the AV car and on yours an AMG badge has been stuck on in addition to the MB wordmarks.

As far as all the documentation goes from the very first day the car is down as an SL60 AMG. It is on the original tax disc license application form, it is on the V5 log book. Somebody somewhere has either mad some big mistakes and somewhere down the line if the car is not an SL60 AMG some or all of the previous 4 owners are not aware of it! If so or whatever the explanation the reverberations could be significant. My insurance is another £112 for the 7 months remaining over my SL500. Have people been paying to insure an SL500 at SL60 AMG rates?!

Will keep you all posted as this is starting to turn out to be very interesting....also very stressful and very disconcerting.

Does the VIN printout show "AMG technology package (с 01.01.1992)" ? It's code 957.

Cause if it does I think it means you have an 60.

Just one that doesn't drive like one :wallbash:

Agreed a 957 code would be are very hard indicator to ignore.

On the plus side, I did find another "SL60" engine bay like yours: -

Well the first three numbers confirm what AMG have already told you. It also rather suggest that they only did the body kit.

What's the 793?

Is there any way of finding & contacting the original supplying dealer?.....

They must have been the ones to have originally dealt with the order placed by the original owner...They must also have done a pre-delivery check & then all subsequent services up until it was sold out of the 'area'....

Iirc M-B dealership databases go back to 1993, this was when all notes/history/info on ones vehicle was transefered onto databases instead being stored on paper.... So your car should fit in with this.

Someone else more clued up should be able to clarify this for us....

Doesn't sound good but we shall see what MB CAC come back with next.

793 AMG-WHEE.8,5X18 SQUE.-IN DEPTH 25 245/40 SEV.PARTS whatever that means.

I have been in regular contact with MB CAC who will liaise with the supplying (Mercedes Great West Road, Brentford) and are doing a full investigation as the history of this car and to clear up all anomalies.

I bought my first car from these people....not my favourite dealer!!!

Car however was wonderful. Brand new 190E 2.00......still going strong....should never have sold it.

rockits you said you got it for a bargain price maybe the seller knew its not a sl60 ? fingers crossed for you it is.

I have just spoken to the previous owner and he is also speaking to MB CAC UK now as he was totally unaware of these issues and is rightfully extremely aggrieved. He has also been in contact with his solicitor as well. At least this is all gathering pace now! Maybe the truth will out soon!!

I can`t tell you how sorry i feel mate, but i hope that some good news is yet to come :thumb:

I genuinenly believe the seller was totally unaware of this. He bought it from a Director of Peacock's clothing who was the 3rd owner. The Peacock's Director bought it personally from Peacock's Ltd who were the second owner. The first owner was Denis Lewis (Lennox's brother) so you can't really have a better more genuine history than this. The car was serviced at Mercedes Great West Road until it moved to the 2nd owner in Cardiff where it was serviced at Mercedes Cardiff. The 4th and last owner has had it for 6 years and had it service by his family Merc Indy.

All those owners and all those MOT's and no-one spotted the inconsistency with the engine numbers? Amazing really.

Just spoke to MB again to get the location of the engine number as I really nee to confirm this before I go further. They have said it is around the back of the engine just opposite the location of the VIN/Chassis number when viewed from the front offset slight to the left. I can see a stamped number in the block with a mirror but it just says HWA 119 08 if my mirror reading is correct! There is also an HWA part code on the lower part of the engine cover that the filters sit in as I have taken all that off.

Any ideas where the serial number of the engine is on an SL60? If it not an SL60 and is an SL500 is an SL500 engine number in the same place?

Indeed that is what I can't understand. Surely if it was ordered as an SL500 and the tax application and V5 said SL60 AMG the owner would have queried it? Surely this couldn't have been supplied wrong day one and 4 owners and 13 years haven't spotted anything.
