So if I had All Season tyres . . .

So after I poked a hole in the packing, I was relieved to find an alloy wheel as well. Even more surprising is the fact that I've got some tyres with decent tread - about 5mm - and more importantly they are M+S tyres (mud and snow, not Marks and Spencers).

Primewell PS830 - a quick google reveals they are Bridgestones budget tyre ?!

Are you sure that is a M&S tyre? Does it have the mountain/snowflake symbol?

Those tread blocks dont look like a winter tyre to me.

I used to think the same until I saw some General Altimax all-season M&S tyres

It seems the tread pattern in M&S can look very similar to summer tyres.

Well, reason I said they are M&S is because they have them written on them !

Not new enough for the new style symbols.

Having driven to work with them, they feel stiff, but I guess they would.

They are listed as an all season tyre, so perhaps that is why they don't have an aggressive snow pattern ?

The mountain snowflake symbol is at least 6 years old so if you have a winter tyre older than that it probably would have hardened by now and be of little use.

What does the date stamp say on the tyre?

Wow, thanks for the heads up - probably why they feel a bit stiff.

I will have a look when it is light.

Probably hunt about for new tyres - Vredstein Quatrac 3s possibly, depends on availability

I am not convinced. I had a quick google and couldnt find anything to say that a general Altimax with that tread pattern was designed for winter conditions.

In the US and Canada, the term 'all season' rather oddly means anything but all season and is used to describe all year round use most probably in areas where they dont really have seasons.

Can you link me to that exact tyre somewhere?

Thanks for the input guys, it is appreciated !

I had a surprise delivery this morning as I was expecting a breakers to take ages to get something delivered.

Delivery guy said 'I've got some tyres for you' and alarm bell started ringing, especially after he passed me what felt light just a tyre !

They look suspiciously like the tyres Conti have been complaining about, you might as well have bought tyres fron Marks & spencers when the snow comes.

M+S Marked Summer Tyres a Risk to Winter Driving, Warns Conti

I bought the wheels, not tyres. Cheaper than a set of new steel wheels as well !

But yes, I agree with the article, but then again I wouldn't expect Primewells to compete with the premium brands.

Maybe you're right. Most reviews for the Altimax HP are American websites where all-season is not the same as it is here. But they are marked with "M S" on the sidewall.

General Altimax also have a "Winter" and "Artic" model in their range.

Just an update on the Primewells.

Either due to age or cheapness, I'd avoid these - these are not confidence inspiring tyres.

However, I managed to get 320 miles to tank vs a typical 280 when using the Pilot Sports 3.

Also, the car does not tramline at all now, which has been a nice change and motorway driving is much quieter.

I'm considering keeping the 15" wheels and replacing tyres, but there will be a massive hit in 'street cred' vs the staggered 18s :)
