SPECS camera on Upper Thames Street, London

>I'm driving through there on sunday evening.

As am I! :-) Look out for the crossfire in the right lane doing 145mph.

I'll be in the Mercedes driving in the left lane doing 10mph, paranoid about these camera's! Maybe the train isn’t such a bad option.

...Interesting about the exact type of camera, 'Scotth uk'.
edit:I stated that the camera was SPECS because that's the only kind of 'average speed camera' that I know. Sorry if I got it wrong.
I can find web references stating either that the cameras in the link CAN monitor your average speed or that the cameras are NOT SPECS - tunnel walls interfere with SPECS. Since the Link cameras are digital, it would be relatively easy to for the software to do a little calculation.
When those cameras were first installed, EVERYBODY religiously went at exactly 30mph, but nowadays, more and more people are speeding up between the cameras. I still stay at 30mph.
I also had the opportunity at the weekend to see the 20mph zone in daylight. Quite what the HSE reuirements are, I don't know, but the new zone just really slows things down and creates a bottleneck. Was it really that necessary to put such a large kink in the road?

I hope you didn't think I was being abbraisive with my responses. That certainly wan't the intention, and super-big sorry if I came across that way. :-(

The cameras in the tunnel can't see anything without a flash, as they don't have IR illuminators installed. The flash units that are installed are very powerful and you'll know when they have fired. In order to average your speed through there it would have to flash every car at the start and exit of the tunnel.....

Saw a brilliant Gatso yesterday near Cambridge, as you near it you notice that it's wearing an orange jacket with " not in use " printed on it so you don't bother slowing down. It then flashes as the jacket is cut out at the front, apparently this is happening more and more often but if you complain you get let off, but how many people bother to complain eh

Sounds like the usual internet rubbish....

...I wasn't miffed at all...didn't even cross my mind...so no need to feel guilty or say sorry. I'm not the world's expert - that's the point of belonging to a forum like this - everybody learns lots of really useful stuff.

About the cameras, all I was trying to do was reconcile my memory with your comments. I was being serious, not sarcastic!

Cheers

However I was told that you are not able to get points on a stretch of road where they are doing road works and reduce the speed. Only the fine...

Plodd ?? can you shed light on this ??

Hi Peter
Until Plodd comes back on site, I would say that the 50mph temporary speed limit signs with the red circumference that is now used for roadworks are 'mandatorory' and these are 'point' generating.

The orange flashing speed signs are a different issue and I object most strongly to driving for maybe three or four miles without any roadworks, breakdown, congestion or debris on the road. Only then to come across a derestricted sign.

If you leave your rear high intensity lights on, and say sorry officer I forgot to switch them off!! You are still breaking the law, but these orange flashing speed limit signs sometimes get left switched on for 24hrs. because 'someone' forgot to switch them off!! Are they enforceable, and would the Police have to state the reasons why they were switched on and indeed show proof?

Regards,
John

Drove through this specs site today. What a load of ****. The cameras are so close together that the second set is probably reading your plates at the same time as the first.

Luckily they stand out like dog's danglies on a cat so unless you are blind you'll be fine. Great big blue poles with bright yellow cameras on top with the SPECS logo near the top.

Made me chuckle though as I watched a load of people going westbound today around 4:30pm at speeds well above 40 mph.

that was me a week ago
