Sudden loss of Mercedes.Me functionality

@richard I did pose this question earlier, but you may have missed it. Have you confirmed whether or not the 3G switch-off will affect the Live Traffic feature for cars lacking 4G connectivity? I'm particularly interested about my wife's 2015 R172 SLK55.

It does seem to be the case that Live Traffic is lost when 3G is switched off.

No 3G or 4G = no live traffic (one of our customers lives in an area with no 3G) - so when 3G goes, if you have a 3g only module there will be no live traffic. Also, Mercedes won't let you re-subscribe to live traffic if you don't have the 4G/LTE module

Thanks for the confirmation.

Is there an option for upgrade to a 4G module for the R172?

That’s annoying as they allowed us to subscribe in September, knowing that we (the UK) would be losing 3G coverage during the subscription period. I’m expecting Vodaphone to pull the plug before the end of January.

Q. If the 4G/LTE module is fitted outside of the MB dealer network, does that count as an ‘official’ device in terms of future MB Live Traffic subscriptions?

Q. Would it be a better/more effective solution to have a CarPlay module added to our COMAND system instead of converting it to 4G?

That's probably the way I will going once I lose live traffic.. for the w205 can get a module installed less than £300 or purchase from aliexpress and diy for lot less..

Do the (relatively) cheap CarPlay modules work with COMAND NTG5*5?

The only compatible one I’ve seen so far is £499 + £250 fitting.

What vehicle do you have and what year? Do you have the smartphone integration symbol next to your USB sockets inside the armrest area?

Thanks for the input.

I haven’t looked on aliexpress. Wouldn’t know exactly what to look for or who would be a trustworthy supplier. Plus I have no intention of pulling trims and dash panels etc. off in order to fit a module that might not even work properly etc. Far too many opportunities for me to mess things up.

No, my days of grovelling about, kneeling on the drive with the rain pouring down my Rse crack, head in the footwell with a torch clenched between my teeth whilst hands with bloodied knuckles are reaching for some unreachable effin’ fastener that turns out to need some esoteric tool that I don’t have…, are long gone.

So, if and when I go for some sort of resolution to this mess for which Mercedes have (thus far) been quite happy to avoid offering solutions for, besides selling me a new(er) car of course, I will have to find/utilise a reputable installer.

But, again thanks for your input I do appreciate it.

Ah ok I thought I'd mention aliexpress cos all these modules come from China anyway no matter the mark up! I don't want to take my dash apart in case I break something but its a fairly straightforward job, seen plenty of youtube content..

Just as an aside I received a service reminder email from the local dealership yesterday, which interestingly contained the current mileage of the car. The impressive bit is that we were driving it at the time and this exactly matched the display on the cluster when I opened the email on my phone! I was a passenger, btw :)

We've done a few cars now, changing 360 (UMTS/3G) to 362 (LTE/4G) - info here

- has to be done at the workshop., and we have to order the right parts against the VIN etc in advance

For cars with code 350, we are waiting until we have cars that don't function before we do those as its loads of wiring changes etc and at the moment you can still extend your live traffic subscription on those so maybe that module falls back to 2G !

Cheers

Thanks for the update. Ours is still receiving live traffic date, but I am assuming that we’re still getting 3G in our area at the moment.

The Integrated automotive product is designed and made in the UK. Its by far and away the best of breed product. If you find another Apple CarPlay / Android Auto system for circa £300 or less ask yourself what the quality of the components is going to be after the VAT is removed, the profit for the seller and the profit for the manufacturer.
