Tell me about owning a Range Rover..

Interesting that you went with a N/A petrol SL and going with a supercharged RR. I would do the exact opposite. Our next family bus is very likely to be another RR but definitely with a petrol engine this time.

ONE of the main reasons for the SL choice is that it is my wife's and as such (I rarely drive it), it doesn't do many miles which is bad for the ABC system, standard on the larger capacity SL and to be honest, I'm not that bothered about outright performance anymore. A RR would be our only vehicle. I agree with the fuel choice; although he diesel version makes sense and more are available, in for a penny, in for many pounds.

Thanks for the link. I already have that particular one in my saved list along with the other currently available stock of 5ls/c. I have decided to sell my van before buying the RR…have yet to decided whether to sell the SL privately or trade it in but my preference would be for a 2012 model of which I had two saved but they have been sold in the past week.

Back in the ninetees I had a bit to do with the RR classics. We did some work for DPR ( Dennis Priddle Racing) who made a great supercharged conversion. Also overfinch did a nicely tweaked normally aspirated which was a great drive with smashing handling. I also have a soft spot for the original RR. I crewed a service truck on a German organised off-road rally in Tunisia in '94 and driving our Range across a sand rippled Sahara was unbelievably smooth compaired to a G Wagon on the same stretch( no offence to G wagon owners intended.)
If the running gear is serviced properly they are pretty reliable and don't incurr £1000 headlight igniter costs that the newer models have. H4s still work ok!

I had the exact problem with mine, I had it flushed 3 times at the main agents because of shudder when pulling off, and towing was evil !!, I had to sell it in the end because I couldn't live with it, and getting the main dealer to even agree there was a problem was a joke, loved the car but never again, 35k miles mine had done !!. Sad

I have a friend who is a specialist in land rovers and he had the same vibration problems starting off very faintly on the motorway. He still likes them but has bought a cayenne since. I drove a small engined auto a few years ago and although it was a fantastic car it just didn't make you feel 'god like' in the way a Range does. A neighbour at work said the same about x5's. Faster, better built etc etc but still went back to a Range. In Devon Discos, RR's and Freelanders are as common as muck. It just shows you how poor the farmers are since it would appear better to look after the hedgerows than have a dairy heard in terms of EU subsidies

Have you considered a Porsche Cayenne, or Audi q7? The Porsche is very capable on and of road, far from the flimsy plastic thing I was expecting. :thumb:

The Q7, Cayenne and VW Touareg are all... basically the Touareg V6 3L diesel and I really rate it. It is shaping up to be the most reliable car I've ever owned.

We happened to be passing a VW garage today so went and had a good root around the Touareg, keeping alternatives in mind in case my wife doesn't like the size of the RR.

I found the Touareg good looking and the extras/options were sensible (it was an R-line? we looked at) but the main problem I found was with headroom. The framing of the sunroof hits the side of my head even with the seat at lowest and rearmost position.
We haven't discounted it (or the Q5, Cayenne) as such but would need a one without a sun roof which means we couldn't have an R-line.

At the moment, the list of alternatives is shrinking. Once we look at (and maybe discount a Q7) there will be only one thing left to do…I am fusing man maths with man psychology in preparation for the RR 'unveil'.:o

A friend had a Q7 but sold it due to unsustainable front tyre wear .

To be fair the Q7 is an awesome tool, we had the v8 diesel which was a complete animal.
However, agree about tyre wear, servicing was cripplingly expensive even by MB standards, and for the size of it I found it disappointing inside - should have been far roomier than it was.

I've been discussing getting another V8 TDi Q7 with the wife and the number one gripe is that for a motor of its sheer size, it's crazy how small it is inside and I think the low roofline has a lot to do with it.

I only got 7k out of mine Lee. You did well..
It was tiny inside compared to the competition, I should have insisted on a GL.....
Hence why I doubt we'd ever get another one.

Funnily enough it's also the reason I doubt we'd ever have a Rangie - I on't feel they are particularly big in the back seats, and the rear arch protrudes so much it always seems an effort to get in the back. That said, based that on L322..

Found a potential purchase. Hoping to view it at the weekend. It has literally just arrived at the dealership…four/five days prep should include a repair to the rear nearside wheel arch, I would imagine!

Looks like damage to the side of the front passenger seat too.

Also keep in mind that, obviously dependant on how long you keep it, the Epsom green isn't the most desirable of Range Rover colours but it is a personal thing.

I think it looks rather good in that green. If I were to buy one, I certainly wouldn't want a black or white one.

The colours are definitely a generational thing; my dad thinks an Aston Martin should only be in green or silver, I prefer black.

From my time on the RRS forum, the gentlemens choice seems to be Stornaway Grey.
