I NEVER thought for one minute that I would raise a thread on this particular forum.

All this week I have helped my son look at replacement vehicles for his Ford Escort. If I am completely honest the process has left me in so much pain I cannot sleep and it is a struggle to keep smiling.

Today was the big day, the car was bought, the wife and son went off to Exeter to collect the necessary documentation and then collect the pride and joy, so I can now finally relax.

After lunch number one son decides to take his immaculate, sparkling, pristine condition VW Golf GTi for a quick spin (not literally :) ) around the block before giving it a wash and polish.

Five minutes later we get a telephone call..............

Yup, you've guessed. "Dad can you come quick, I've been involved in an accident and the car behind is smoking, I'm just down the road at the junction of Ilsham ****** and Thatcher *******!"

We proceed with full dispatch and the first sight is my son's car still looking immaculate but a BMW 330i was just behind it with its front completely stove in, steam was coming from under the bonnet and pools of fluid pouring out from underneath!!!! My son had stopped to allow oncoming traffic to manoeuvre around some parked cars and the 330 had come around a blind corner and drove straight into the back of the Golf!!!   The BMW had braked so hard, the front dipped and the bumper went underneath the rear bumper of the VW. The grille, bonnet took the full force of the impact causing the horrible damage, the rear of the Golf is bent, but still driveable!!

My son is complaining of a sore head, stiff neck etc. he had also contacted the Police but just after I arrived some stroppy upper class snobbish householder approached us and demanded we move both vehicles!!! My wife thinks that I can be 'slightly' intimidating at times and this 'snob' chose the wrong person, at the wrong time to try and boss about. When I 'politely' told him what to do with his advice he acted like a little child that could not get their own way. "Right, I'm not going to tell you what happened then", he then stormed off with his tail between his legs. The Police turned up, breathalysed and interviewed both drivers, and I located two other independant witnesses.:) Wife thought I looked quite funny, I had just about reached the end of my endurance and was valiantly trying to stay vertical with the aid of my crutches and useless legs :o :o but gravity was taking its toll and I eventually collapsed onto the stretcher in our 'limo' :) My son has gone to hospital!:o   I am back home on my bed, unable to now move, the VW is in our driveway with the rear end looking quite sad and all is now well with the World what a day, what a blooming week!!!

This morning I was up reading my books at 2 am, at 4 am I thought blow it.... Smile, things could be worse!!

I smiled and yes..... Things have got worse.

Oh well tomorrow is another day.

Hopefully the wife will soon be phoning with an update concerning number one son. The annoying thing is..... He will want sympathy   :D

:D Smiling is sometimes easier than snarling. We all sometimes criticise the Police, but they were there within about ten minutes, and surprise surprise, they have given us a 'Collision Care Pack' This is a polythene envelope containing two postcards to put down our details which we then exchange with other others. A pen, booklet explaining the law, who makes decisions (sloping shoulders onto the CPS) and a few other question and answer type features, then a space for a sketch and some notes.

I was really impressed with the modern technology. My son only took out the insurance yesterday and purchased the car this morning. The Police Officer checked on her radio, the registered keep came up as Trade, BUT the insurance stated my son was the insured driver and it gave full details of the insurance company!!!! Insurance taken out yesterday and it now appears that there is very little time delay in this information going onto the PNC! I say EXCELLENT, but no doubt some will complain of it being to 'Big Brother'

My son is still at the hospital, but I am a great believer in 'No news is good news!!' I have visions of there being a long queue of holiday makers with varying degrees of medical problems.

Regards,
John

Sorry to hear this John ... what a nightmare !! The main thing is that he's OK. Hope he doesn't have to use that new insurance policy just yet !

Hi Sym,
Thanks very much indeed ;)

My wife has just phoned from the hospital, number one son has 'just' got whiplash. I have spoken to the insurance company and they are treating it as a no blame accident. A courtesy car will be delivered first thing Monday, and my son will also be getting legal advise on Tuesday.

I am going to try my hardest to get his car repaired at a workshop of our choosing as opposed to a cheap and cheerful Insurance repair workshop.

Regards,
John

Glad to hear your son isn't too bad. (I won't make any comment about the driving skills of BMW drivers.)

Just think, his compensation payout may just cover the cost of the car. ;)

The insurance database does appear to be updated almost instantly these days.

Thanks Plodd,
I am having extra medication to try and get my pain under control and my son has now been given liquid morphine for his whiplash!! What a pair of junkies, although the poor old boy is also concussed.

I am offering to be his financial adviser :) :).

The insurance database was very impressive. Are you taking advantage of this or is its detection rate simply too impressive??

I've just read this thread. Oh Boy how unfortunate..

It's always the same, you drive a banger (generic term) and nothing ever happens, as soon as you invest proper money in a decent car you get someone damages it.:(

I think you did the right thing to get the Police involved, it seems trivial but there is an injury and at least there is an official presence to check insurance validity.

Stick to your guns and get the car repaired at the best bodyshop you know of.

John, sorry to hear of you and your son's woes. I was very interested to hear of the insurance information being almost immediately undated. Very interesting indeed.

As for the skills of BMW drivers, I became one earlier this week :o I did trade in my Golf if that makes things any better. I do hope all works out well with the Golf for your son, both with his whiplash and the car!

Let us know what happens.

Regards,
Brett

Hope all will be OK Glojo, a whiplash injury is not a pleasant experience. Make sure your boy looks after his neck. I had a whiplash injury some 11 years ago and the damage is permanent. I was never told until recently that the top two vertibrate are permanantly damaged so make sure you get all the facts from the hospital. Good luck and very best wishes, Graeme

Glad to hear your son and heir is intact...on several occasions I've had to ring panic-stricken parents and tell them that all is ok...

Not surprised the BMW took the brunt of the impact, in that sort of collision the incoming car generally comes off worst. Had a Volvo 740 slam into the back of my old 405 a few years back. The front of the Volvo was wrecked, the sum total of damage to the 405 was a cracked rear valance and a smashed numberplate.

With any luck, given that it was the other party's fault, you should be able to push the issue and have the car sorted at your preferred establishment.

Spot on,
Today the sun is shining, the birds are singing and my son is only slightly injured :)

He has just arranged for his car to go to the repair centre of our choice :bannana: This place is very professional with full low bake facilities. Direct-Line have simply stated that if we chose their option, the car would be collected today, and repairs would commence tomorrow. With our option the car has to go to the repair centre and they then fax the quote to the insurers. I am not fussed about any short delay, and hopefully neither is my son, who is at present on the telephone with a solicitor!! (are they vultures, or good guys :o :o :o ) Direct line has stated that Enterprise will be in touch to arrange for a courtesy car.

I read posts complaining about attitudes of insurance companies etc, and fully accept we all speak as we find, but so far I cannot praise EVERYONE enough. Everyone I have spoken to, and now today, everyone my son has spoken to have been very helpful, supportive and courteous.

Number one son has just stated he will not even have to pay out the excess.

Regards,
John

Whiplash injury in the long run.

As has been stated already be extremely careful with whiplash injury. Ideally your son should be wearing a support collar for several days post injury. It obviously depends on the severity of impact but I would be taking legal advice prior to any settlement for uninsured losses and getting a full medical assessment including X-ray/ MRI to eliminate the possibility of long term soft tissue damage or vertebral displacement. Casualty departments are very busy places and their examinations are necessarily trauma oriented rather than detailed assements of non life threatening injury. After apparently "recovering" from the initial trauma the permanent long term effects of my whiplash injury only surfaced 9 months post accident! You have up to 3??-5?? years to lodge a claim for personal injury so dont be too hasty to settle .
John,it is my hope your son has indeed escaped lightly but tread carefully and take legal advice.

Hi Grober,
Thank you very much indeed for the much appreciated advice.

Very kind regards,
John

he had best get better for next saturday, or he will not be able to sit in the SLK let alone have a gentle ride about!

Still, hope everything goes okay under the circumstances!!

Eeek. Thats a nightmare John, but I hope no one has suffered any long term damage.

Now you know why I always keep a disposal camera in the car - you never know when it may come in handy, and sure helps if you have to move cars in a hurry. Only the other week I had to use it when a mini rolled into my car in a car park !!

Keep smiling...

Great advice,
The Police attended this incident, there were independant witnesses and both the offending driver and his passenger admit my son was stationary. The passenger actually told the Police officer he shouted a warning to the driver! Carrying a camera is an excellent idea, nowadays it appears fashionable to have mobile phones with built in camera's.

I have managed to get back on my feet today and the underside of the VW has taken a beating. The spare wheel well has slightly concertinaed so I would assume this rear section will need cutting out and replacing?

The bodyshop will probably pull it back out. They usually do that rather than cut any seams and weld in new sections, apparently this is deemed a better repair as it keeps all the original welds intact.

This is a common repair which is why Renault now have bolt in boot floors on the Megane if not others.

Hi Dieselman,
I am completely out of touch with the modern capabilities of repairing damaged vehicles and am grateful for your input.

This steel is terribly kinked in numerous directions. How do they manage to restore this mess to its original shape and steel :o :o :) keep its integrity? I am not talking bent metal I am talking yukky kinked, concertinaed stuff. a 530i is not a small ramming machine!!

Thanks very much for putting me right,

Regards,
John

It always makes sense to carry a camera, p/copies of the insurance certificate, and p/copies of your license - both bits, also strangely enough p/copies of the MOT. These are the bits the police are interested in - are you allowed to drive, are you insured, is your car in a roadworthy conditions. Yes its all supposed to be on their computers - but computers only as good as the people putting information into them!
Note I'm not one to leave these items in a conspicous location inside.
Hope it all works out.
The other party will, in all likelyhood, be at fault as far as the insurance is concerned.
Les
