The end of a 'perfect week!!!

Hi Dieselman,
I am completely out of touch with the modern capabilities of repairing damaged vehicles and am grateful for your input.

This steel is terribly kinked in numerous directions. How do they manage to restore this mess to its original shape and steel :o :o :) keep its integrity? I am not talking bent metal I am talking yukky kinked, concertinaed stuff. a 530i is not a small ramming machine!!

Thanks very much for putting me right,

Regards,
John

Obviously it depends on the actual damage but normally the metal is tensioned by using a puller and the ridges are hammered down. Sounds crude but it will restore the metal to the proper shape.
If you think about it bodyshops have always employed "panel beaters".

John, I hope your son and his car are restored to their former selves as soon as possible - what a shame for him, so soon after purchasing it!

Cheer up. The lad's okay - that's all that matters :D

I used to enjoy helping a friend who owned a bodyshop and it was a joy watching him mould metal into different shapes. Now that you have pointed out that this might be straightened I will... ;) keep you informed. :) :) Thanks again,
John

Hi John,
Sorry to hear of your son's recent misfortune. I hope he makes a full recovery and that the golf is restored to a 'better than new' look.
As usual, the advice given in this thread is both constructive and sympathetic.Pay particular attention to Grober's advice and make sure he (not Grober :-) ) is thoroughly checked over.
My wife was a victim of a rear end collision 3 days before we were due to be married. She had to wear a collar (removed it for the wedding day) for the next couple of months. Although this happened over 10 years ago she occasionally complains of pains in her neck and I am convinced it was from this incident.
Hope all turns out well for you and yours soon.
Mac.

Hi machasm,
Thanks very much for your very constructive and supportive advice. I am so sorry to hear of your wife's ongoing condition, and this whiplash injury is certainly not very pleasant at all.

We talk about compensation, solicitors etc but neither of these can take away pain and hopefully my son will end up pain free and penniless ;) Solely compensation wise if you understand what I mean? A few pounds would be nice, but pain free and healthy is priceless.

Thanks again,
John

Great advice,
The Police attended this incident, there were independant witnesses and both the offending driver and his passenger admit my son was stationary. The passenger actually told the Police officer he shouted a warning to the driver! Carrying a camera is an excellent idea, nowadays it appears fashionable to have mobile phones with built in camera's.

I have managed to get back on my feet today and the underside of the VW has taken a beating. The spare wheel well has slightly concertinaed so I would assume this rear section will need cutting out and replacing?

John

John,

Think you'll find that a camera phone picture can't be used as evidence. (to my knowledge - perhaps plod can advise here) Better to have disposal with film which cannot be tampered with - lots easier.

Hi saorbust,
Good advise as usual, hopefully this will all go through smoothly!!!!!!!!!!!! How's that for putting the kiss of death on it? The car is en-route to Paignton to be assessed, and the car hire company have allegedly contacted my son at his place of employment.

Hi John,
Very sorry to hear of your son's misfortune. As has been mentioned before make sure your son gets all the tests he can for that whiplash as in the future it will be a big problem, i know from bitter experience.
I hope it all turns out satisfactorily

Hi John

Hope your son makes a full recovery with no lasting side effects. Your upset at the accident must surely be eased by your possitive experience of all the professional parties involved.
