The EV fact thread

No longer for sale or banned. Same difference.
There’s a fairly big difference. The former means you won’t be able to buy a brand new ICE car any more, and the latter means that owning or using an ICE car is prohibited by law. I’ve only heard of the former being planned, not the latter.

What do you define as ‘interest in cars’?

I love cars - owned plenty of high performance cars and enjoyed every second, modified them cosmetically and performance wise etc..

But yes, I’m not interested in driving an old oil burner which needs an oil change every 3000 miles when newer technology exists that is better in practically every way.

I’ve always said I’m still a fan of the romanticism of a big V8/10/12 - but ultimately they are a dying breed now.
A car guy that has never done an oil & filter change? Not difficult nor a burden on your valuable time if you have the correct tools.

Denigrating the diesel engine always puzzles me. Those who do appear unaware that diesel engines are built to far more exacting tolerances than most petrol engines.

One can only wonder at what precision engineering lurks under the skin of most EV's. Hard to know what all the plastic parts do i suppose unless you are fluent in Chinese.

What‘s the relevance of “Chinese”?

Can you read the native languages of the countries in which ICE car component’s are made?

I would say I’m a ‘car guy’ but haven’t done an oil and filter change on anything since my Mercedes apprenticeship over 25 years ago… I also enjoy watching tv but have no idea how it works or how to maintain/fix it 🤷🏻‍♂️

Long but interesting video from a fairly pro-EV viewpoint:

I for one hadn't realised that public charging was potentially so expensive, if/when you need to use it.

You’ll be telling us next that you enjoy eating but haven’t made a soufflé. Seriously, have a word with yourself.

An expensive EV made with cheapo Chinesium components may well be good for the profit margins of manufacturers but from a consumers perspective it is a rip off.

Yep i can read all the component manufacturers names on my w201 diesel. Bosch, Lucas & ATE mostly. Dead easy.

Why do you only need to be able to read the brand name if it’s Bosch, Lucas or ATE, but be fluent in Chinese if it’s an EV?

You make some compelling points.

Some posters on here maintain that car manufacturers make a loss on each EV they sell.

I don't know what the facts are, but I do know that it can't be a rip off if the manufacturers make a loss. So someone got something wrong, that's for sure. But which is it?

High value battery components on almost all EV's are made in China. A BYD manufactured this and a CATL made that.

Then we have the tall tales of battery plants being planned for closer to home that always seem to fail, BritishVolt and AMTE for example.

Sorry but what’s wrong with being built in China?

You’re probably posting this hatred from a device made in China, connected to the internet via a router made in China… 🤦‍♂️ ahhh the irony.

I think ChipChop doesn’t like Chinese made stuff but I bet he owns a phone, computer, TV or home broadband router (possibly all four) that are made in China! :)

Sadly the days of German made vehicles with mainly German manufactured components are over.

Even Bosch etc don’t manufacture stuff where they used to in the 80s. Times change!

BTW, the build quality on my Korean EV (not Chinese) is very very good. I don't have first hand experience with Chinese cars so can't comment on their build quality.

And, incidentally, in a reliability survey carried out in the US recently, 8 out of the top 10 cars were various Toyota models.... the two others were a Subaru (also Japanese) and - somewhat surprisingly - a BMW.

So much for European built quality....

Pretty sad when all the pro EV'ers can sling is pejoratives at those who see issues with the rise of EV's and the end of ICE.

Some people I'm sure saw issues with the end of the ICE age.... 10,000 years ago. And yet here we are.

Hatred?

Criticism is the term i would use. The global car industry being taken over by the Chinese is the reality. Apparently you would prefer that Westerners did not notice that drastic change until it is too late.
