The EV fact thread

The Smart 3 Brabus has the same platform, electrical architecture and power as the Volvo EX30 performance.
Both vehicles are made in China on the same Geely EV platform.
Badge engineering is even more rife these days than in the past.

Lynk & Co and Zeekr are also Geely brands, sold in Europe and the US.

Reading the story it seems this is just an evaluation though rather than actual adoption

The demonstration fleet comes as part of Wincanton’s participation in the eFREIGHT 2030 consortium, which looks to evaluate the future viability of eHGVs.

Carl Hanson, Managing Director of Transport at Wincanton, commented:

Low-emission vehicles like these are undoubtedly the future of logistics, but widespread adoption is still years away.

YouTube isn't necessarily the most reliable of sources, but I do share the sentiment in this video.

I think that most people simply do not appreciate how far ahead are Chinese EV manufacturers.

The only real competition at current if from South Korea.

China. Is really, really good at making videos of products which show them to be revolutionary and incredible. Ever bought anything from Temu based on the video of the product only to be hugely disappointed when it arrives.. Because its garbage..

Plus any EV from China will capture huge amounts of personal data on the owner.. I doubt they have the data security guarantees and robust system to keep that safe...

Ev's capture more personal data on you than most people realize, way more than your phone ever does...

What is the outcome of this data capture?

Good question, but they capture it, even the EV chargers capture data on you.. Its on the cloud and it could easily be hacked if there are any holes in the security. Some vehicles even capture photos of you as you approach the car.

One example.. if an MP or senior advisor / states person had an EV and a government wanted to spy on them and map their movements / activities.. they could easily. Its just another door open for them.

We are monitored enough these days. I have a car for freedom of movement, and car that takes this away cant be a good thing?

You watched that programme on channel 5 the other night aswell, did you. 🙂👍

Firstly, looking at the list of high profile businesses that have been hacked - North Face and Cartier are two most recent ones (that's from earlier this week) - there's no reason to assume that European or North American car makers are any better than the Chinese in securing their data.

Then, this isn't an 'EV thing' as such, most modern high-end cars are 'connected cars' and regularly upload data to the manufacturers' datacentres with or without the customers being aware. In fact, the police have been using this for some time now to solve serious crimes - see for example:

"Whall may have believed he had covered his tracks by having the Land Rover destroyed, possibly believing any telematics data would also go up in smoke, but his every move had been recorded and stored, back at Jaguar Land Rover.

When police obtained the data, it provided another, key piece of the puzzle.

It revealed Whall had parked at Porth Dafarch beach - a short walk from Mr Corrigan's home - at 23:10 on 18 April.

The boot was opened at 23:11:04 and closed 39 seconds later. This was Whall, said prosecutors, removing the crossbow.

Mr Corrigan was shot at either 00:29 or 00:30 on 19 April."

That was 6 years ago..... you can only imagine what data car makers are collecting now.

Which personal information would a car manufacturer hold about me with an EV which they wouldn’t hold with an ICE of similar age?

I’m not sure there’s much because the ability to capture and transmit data is all about connectivity and not at all about drivetrain.

I have modern cars and an EV, and I struggle to see which information would be available beyond locations, routes, consumption and speeds.

Car manufacturers already have personally identifiable information including credit card number home address.

What am I missing?

Nowt, probably. 🙄

Just reflecting on the above, apart from consumption, my phone, dashcam and speedcam/safety alert are all capable of reporting the same information.

Best not like that post, just in case.
