thoughts on shell helix ultra

sorry for another oil question, was all set tom order some mobil 1 new life oil but been reading a lot of recommendations for shell helix ultra, any thoughts if it's worth the extra money for mobil 1 over shell? thanks

Dont know..What car is it and why not go for mb branded via mb Newcastle on ebay?

I used it when it was on special when MB oil was only sold in 1L containers, Seems ok but I don't run my oil for the full year change it every 6months so wouldn't know long term

I use Shell Helix Ultra in fact I've just done an oil change with it.

Helix Ultra is very highly regarded by professional oil formulators and considered to be one of the best oils available. It's undoubtedly very good oil and probably at least as good as MB's own oil. If you are still trying to decide, I doubt there is any advantage one way or the other compared to Mobil 1 as they both meet the MB spec.

thanks for the input, thinking as my engine is high mileage the 5w40 may be better than the 0w40 and have read a lot about mobil1 needing topping up often

The MB Delaer used Shell Helix Ultra when I had my old W203 serviced with them. Seemed fine....

It's what I've used for the last 2 or 3 oil changes.

The engine hasn't seized solid, so it seems to be working.

I use 5W40 even in a low mileage engine. I think it gives better protection than a typical 30 for an infinitesimal loss in MPG. Helix ultra is in any case one of the thinner 40's being towards the lower end of the band. It's 13.1 cSt @100 C within a range of 12.5 - 16.3 cSt. A more typical 5W40 tends to be in the middle of the band at 14 cSt.
