Thoughts on this car (W211 E55 AMG)?

Chaps,

I am out of the loop with E55 prices but isn't this a cheap car?

Used Mercedes E CLASS (211) E55 AMG 2002 for sale - PistonHeads (Ref 817785)

I found this on eBay completed items during my search - had showed it to JohnEBoy.

Bit of a bargain and had planned to see it but couldnt fit it in. From the emails back and fore and pics sent immaculate is stretching it due to seat wear and fact pics were taken in July this year not recently. Also hasnt had a service since 2010.

Thats what put me off, seller though was very genuine and nice guy and sure it is a bargain for someone.

I have now bought this Used Mercedes-benz E Class Saloon E55k 4dr Tip Auto in Hook, Hants | Aro Cars  so no longer looking - will post some pics up tomorrow.

I had seen this by searching completed eBay listings a few weeks back - i had shown it to JohnEBoy and was meant to go and see it but couldnt fit it in weekend before last.

Had long email conversations with the seller and got some more pics etc. Immaculate description i would question as wear to seats is bad and pics in the ad are from July this year. It also hadnt had a service since Oct 2010 and wasnt showing on dash another was due. For those reasons i didnt follow it up any further.

However seller was nice enough guy, seemed genuine answered all my boring questions.

I though have now bought this Used Mercedes-benz E Class Saloon E55k 4dr Tip Auto in Hook, Hants | Aro Cars on Friday  went straight to a stag weekend after purchase and only back today so will add some pics up tomorrow as have a day off to recover...

looks like a nice clean example, well doe!

Great news, congratulations! :)

im having this debate, but im going between the s4 or rs4 estate or e55 amg, so why go from an s4 to an amg e55? my budjet is 10-11k as well.

S4 was great car, I had the b6 but assume for your budget you are looking at the B7 S4's?

We are having a 2nd child and when looking at tandem prams etc I began to look at the RS6 and RS4 (B5) estates. Whilst doing so caught a thread discussing RS6's and W211 E55's. Compared rear space and boot sizes and Merc was bigger. Also looked at some of the options on Merc, the comfort and also extra speed on top of the S4.

With the RS6 it had the suspension and gearbox issues and general maintenance bills which were a lot more than the Merc or RS4. The RS4 (B5) had very poor rear space even less so than the S4 and ones i was looking at were 10-12 years old and showing their age.

i want something fun but comfy and has to seat the kids occasionally!!!!! im looking at what ever is the fastest! i love my motorbikes, so im missing that bit of oooommff from four wheels the rs4 is an insane car, but for 11k it would be an old dog and more than likelly thrashed to its back teath! the e55 amg would be looked after by the previouse owner! i think it would also be the more comfortable of the two cars, the s4, not to sure! i think if i got an s4 id wish id got the rs4! i might just give up and stick with the van and bikes!!!!.......oh and by the way, i had this dilemma years ago when the kids where in prams, the s4 and bmw 3 series estates are rubbish for boot space, i went for the bmw 330i and it was a right pain in the back side and ended up selling it a few weeks later and getting a galaxy (yawwwnnnnn!!!) but now the kids are out of prams, im back in buisness!!!!

Any developments Pedro? ;)

No, mainly because I've been swanning around in a new s212 all week and I'm struggling between new and shiny, and old and loud/fast/obnoxious.

I'm not sure if I can drive an old banger any more. Plus when I read about the comments on that particular car my interest dived anyway.

Watch this space. :dk:

What were you looking at Peter?

If that had the full screen COMAND, it would have the perfect W211 spec.

Good find.

Could retro fit COMAND.

That fits into my throwaway cash budget, might by it myself for a weekend toy. I won't need COMAND for that.

old and loud/fast/obnoxious.

You or the car? :p

My C-Class AMG crusade might have to have a W211 E55K detour, seeing the OP's new car makes me pine for a silver one with pano roof...:o

I like a car to suit my personality :p

I agree with your detour option.

Sorry to thread jack this...

I'm in pretty much the exact same position as the OP and since this thread is fairly recent I thought it was relevant...

I'm in the market for an E55K with a budget of around 10K as well.

I went and had a look at this car today:

Used Mercedes E CLASS (211) E55 AMG 53 Plate for sale - PistonHeads (Ref 985576)

It's a great spec with distronic, dynamic seats, command, electric rear blind and factory bluetooth.

On the plus side the disks and pads and tyres (Contis) are all new.

The car was sitting nice and level when I went to see it and it hadn't been started that day (I asked the seller not to).

Firing up from cold it was a bit noisy for 30 seconds or so but to be honest I haven't heard one start from completely cold so it may be fine. It sounded a bit like how worn power steering pump sounds, a whirring sound... As I say though this went away after 30 seconds or so. Otherwise it all seemed fine.

Under the bonnet was a bit grubby and some things were a tad corroded. The S/c belt pulley that's visible has some corrosion to the pulley. Not sure how critical that is....

The SBC looked very much original as did the rad. Both those things concerned me a bit.

Due to some ineptitude on my part (I went by Motorcycle) I only had bike boots on so couldn't drive myself but on the testdrive there were no apparent knocks and the car rode nicely. Performance was 'adequate' :D

My concerns other are...

The drivers seat bolster is pretty scuffed up with some of the thread missing on the double stitching. I don't think there's any risk of it coming apart but it looks ugly to my eyes and would bug me every time I got in and out. The bolster on the drivers seat base was OK. Not perfect but not as pushed down as some that I've seen. The rest of the leather looked good and wasn't dry or cracked.

There was slight scuff to the front bumper which would need a repaint to be perfect.

Generally good paintwork otherwise with some stonechips on the bonnet but all in all it looked fine.

I couldn't find any rust...

One question I have is whether the wheels should have a diamond cut face to them? These were silver painted... There were a few marks so again a refurb would be needed to get perfect but they were pretty decent all in all.

In terms of the paperwork there was a duplicate service book with some pretty sketchy looking stamps in it. They didn't seem to relate to any of the invoices which was weird.

The seller said that Mercedes had confirmed a full history up to 38K after which it had had a service at the garage of the guy who owned it previously (some kind of race prep engine builder firm) at 46K and then the seller had just had it serviced at 58K (oil and trans fluid) by the same garage (as the previous owner)

Is it possible to verify the history with Mercdes at all?

Any input gratefully received....

To me the history and seat bolster could be better and the SBC and rad are both possible problems plus there is a bit of money needing to be spent on tidying generally.

If anyone wants to suggest any alternatives please do...

These engines do make some strange noises and the start up sound you described sounds pretty much par for the course.

SBC pump is unlikely to have been replaced there are cars out there on >140,000 on there original pump and as for the Rad having the original is no bad thing at least you know it has not had a TC contamination fix in the past. Check the build date Rads were changed 09/03 build onwards.

All the bolts and pulleys can show corrosion most clean up pretty easily including the crank pulley, I normally just run an abrasive pad around them.

I have the same issue on the drivers seat, I have a theory but it just that. First the leather is very soft and not particularly hard wearing so sliding across can cause excess wear. As for my theory, well it has something to do with the average waistline of the owners when new :-)

The sketchy history would be my concern.
