Following on from my previous thread - http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/electronics/76402-rear-parcel-shelf-structual-rigidity-12-subs.html

I have installed x2 12" subs and amp on my rear parcel shelf.
I cannibalised this beast -

£70 delivered reconditioned :) But didn't work well in the boot. Too much sound insulation in the boot, big, too heavy!
I tried one driver here first but it wasn't good enough and getting a good seal with the baffle board wasn't easy. Plus less space taken up in the boot when in was on the shelf.

To remove the shelf out with the rear seats, back as well as seat, then remove the side bits, no idea what there called.

Top comes off relatively easy,

So out with the jig saw and cut away some shelf .

Getting the head rests off was about the trickiest part, spent an hour on these blighter's!

Easier to get out if you remove the plastic surround thingies.

Little plastic lever needs pushing forwards to remove the head rests from the mechanism.

Then attach some 25mm MDF to the shelf and pop the speaker in place, seal and add a little extra sound proofing (cream shag pile carpet :))

Job done.

It sounds a lot better than I thought it would do, very pleased for my £80 outlay:D.

Looks the mutts Aandyy. May I ask what your taste in music is. Are you firing Zepplin through it, touch of the Fairport Convention, Now 793, or just every day whats on the radio stuff. Only asking 'cos I'm a bit mutt and geoff (what!!) and could do with a touch more quality sound at volume, rather than bouncing my standard speakers out of their standard homes. Got a JBL 400W GTO amp knocking around somewhere, with some 10" speakers but no sub woofery stuff. All going into a 124 of course. Any advice? The face off unit is a standard Kenwood Radio with a cassette behind a dropdown front linked to a multi disc player in the boot. TIA

Impressively neat work :thumb:
Well done. Boom boom.... :)
How's the boot now, more room? Or still the case is there taking space?

TJ, it's mainly dance music, more towards Happy house and funky house.
And my school days music, Depeche mode, Human League, New Order, Yazoo, you get the picture :p.

Olivier, most of the boot is free now, the cabinets gone, it'll be in my parents log burner in the winter, the speakers only take up about 3" depth in the boot because of 25mm MDF on the shelf, thank heavens for the deep parcel shelf sound deedening.

looks good mate, not sure a sub which is supposed to be boxed will last\sound good as a freeair sub, but see how it goes hey, baffle provided by the boot may compensate!

On Fli's website they talk about the speakers being used in free air as well, so must be OK, I'm running them at half the power I was when it was in the boot anyway.

Update

CD Changer and amp installed into the boot area and a bit of paint applied, had a bit of blue left over so thought why not ;).

Back breaking work, laying on ya back in the boot :D.

Nice job, I know all to well about removing those headrest clips- still to this day I have no idea how I removed them.

The vibrations of those speakers doesn't affect the tracking on the CD player?
I might have thought that being in close proximity with each other the CD might skip at high volumes.

Neat install BTW........................

Hmmm, good point there, never thougt of that but the 25 MDF should absorb most of it.

ill the layout/idea good job done!

so how is the sound quality in the cabin
now they are firing into the rear and not the boot area

Thanks, I'm very pleased with the sound quality and volume.
I wasn't expecting much but it's far better than I could have dreamed for. :thumb:

And the other bonus is I've got a lot more space in the boot compared to before! :dk:

Are your subs free air or conventional box subs as am wondering what kind of a bass note you are hitting - punchy or low and deep?

Thanks.

Who says you can't have punchy and low and deep at the same time?

You need to fill all the holes in the shelf to get an airtight seal between the cabin & the boot. Once you've done that you'll be amazed how much more bass there is

One way to do this is to make up a subshelf out of MDF, bolt it to the underside of the parcel shelf and seal all round with Sikoflex. The speakers are then mounted to the shelf
