Has anyone else noticed large increases in tyre prices during the last six weeks or so? In mid-September, just before I went on holiday, I priced up some Falken HS-439 245/45 R17 95V tyres on the web at £105.80, intending to order them when I returned. I've just priced up the very same tyres on the same website and they're now £146.70 !! That's a hike of £41 in less than six weeks. I can only guess that the old price was before anyone wanted winter tyres and that the price has now been hiked to suit current demand.

It could be just a demand based thing, but there are lots of imported goods that have recently been the subject of big price hikes. My guess is that we're seeing the effect of older forward currency hedges expiring and that the impact of devaluation of Sterling is starting to be felt at consumer level.

Try Paul at Martins 0276 856846 West End near Woking, not a million miles from you

+1

Have used them for the last two sets of tyres that I have bought. Unbeatable on price and excellent service - well recommended :thumb:

"Hi your local stockbroker comment"
A lot of rubber is being burnt ....in more ways than one lol

NB. Rubber supplies like other commodities are going up in value, price etc

Thanks for all the suggestion chaps!

Called Martins Tyres - similar price to online, but they'd have charged me extra for delivery to my wheel refurbishers, so ordered them from mytyres.

Bill - the standard fitment on my car is 245/40/18 front and 265/35/18 rear. I've got some 17" x 8" rims for winter, so have gone for 225/45/17 tyres, as they're about the narrowest I can use on those rims that are readily available AND I don't want to be leaving too many black marks on dry roads.

My son purchased three new tyres on the weekend from mytyres and whichh came to 315.00 however, before purchasing he done a quick search on discount vouchers and saved himself 30.00 from that total.

Just a tip that may save you some money, good luck

It's the falling Euro that's causing the problem. Over six weeks ago it was much cheaper to buy Euro's (and hence Euro-based commodities) but things have changed drastically recently.

I think you meant the rising Euro. :D

Whatever the exchange rate effect, there will be a lot greater call for winter tyres this year. 17" and 18" winters aren't cheap to start with !

It does seem that the poor old motorist is being made to pay through the nose once again, through no fault of his own. Tyre sellers could charge what they liked (probably do, to some extent) and we'll all just have to cough up, as there's no alternative. I ordered the tyres from mytyres, as they had the best overall price that I could find. I guess that they'd not have had stock if I'd ordered them weeks ago at the lower price!

Just been looking around for a set of winter tyres and notice that Pneus Online will price match and offer an additional 3% discount.

Just waiting for a reply to see their price for a set of Nankang SV1 Snow Plus tyres, against mytyres.co.uk of £58.40. They have them listed at £74.52

Most places these days eem to charge £12 and upwards for fitting and balancing.

Also note that although mytyres list thousands of fitting centres, not all will accept delivery of the tyres to them. I only discovered this when i placed my fully fitted order (saved takign a day off for a courier delivery to home) and then realised my three nearest centres would fit but not take delivery. I ended up having to drive 20miles to a fitting centre. Not exactly deal breaking but worth noting if you live in rural areas.

I'd noticed the price rise too. I'd assumed it was because demand is much higher this year. (Cold snap plus forecast of a cold winter plus people becoming more aware of winter tyres.)

Annoying, because I ordered winter tyres + wheels from mytyres only to have the payment fall through. Twice. And now the order's been cancelled and I really can't afford to re-order. Grrr.
