Hello guys,

Just a question ... went to take the car through MOT today and it failed because the front break pads are worn and the rear exhaust back box is leaking.
The MOT guy quoted me £110 for the backbox and £65 for the brake pads.
What do you think of the prices?

If I look online for parts they are like £55 for the backbox and £35 for the pads.

Is it too hard to do it my self?

Cheers.

I have the technical and mechanical ability of a teapot , and yet i managed to change the backbox and front pads on my w124 myself.

Get yourself a Haynes manual for the pads , but the backbox is easy , unbolt it from the mid section and pop a couple of rubber clips off .

Did the prices he quoted you include fitting ? If so , it's hardly worth getting your hands dirty for the difference in price.

They do not do the backbox for my model. So I need to keep on searching I guess

The quoted prices are with installation as well. However I would like to save the installation fees by doing it my self. :-( I have to pay £600 for the CL to be aditionally repainted ... while it's been repaired under the good will corrosion warranty ... so any saving would make sense now :-)

Fitting exhausts is no fun.

Pads are easy enough.

Yes it is £65 less but I am installing them with a friend mechanic.
To be totally honest I did not like the MOT guys approach, I prefer to give the labour to my friend.

The rejection MOT paper... the red part was because of the exaust leak and the recommentation advisory note was for the brake pads

So basically the car failed for the exhaust!! and not the brake pads!
but it passed the emmision tests!

How weird the whole thing can be. Anyway ...
