thinking of putting reconditioned manual gearbox into my w202,not wanting to go to scrapyard for one in case its wrong or is worn, are there any places that do recon boxes ? any advice greatly appreciated

What's wrong with your current gearbox?

believe its worn feels spongey, was only first gear but now 2nd feels spongey, just feels like ther are gaps inbetween gear changes ya know kinda worn, feels like the gear changes are connected by springs and not solid, get no noise at all from the gearbox though.

dunno if that made sense to you or not ?

I had a manual gearbox in my first merc, I found the box was fine, if something is feeling sloppy its more likely to be the over complicated shifter mechanism, I would recommend changing the detents mechanism on the gearbox as well, it was an awful plastic unit which broke on mine releasing 3 hardened steel ball bearings into the gearbox, the replacement was metal and of a much stronger design,

pingping, we were both posting at the same time! I think I may have answered your question!!!

depending on what your like with your hands you could take the shifter mechanism to bits and replace the worn spacers

hmmn i have a feeling this is going to be a tricky one to sort

im good with my hands etc but im not savy with taking gear box bits apart, have done suspension struts on my old passat, bearings, oil changes pads and discs, that sort of stuff so going into a gearbox may cause a few headaches

if you can do that you will be fine!

I renewed the rubber mounts that connect the shifter to the box, there was 3 of them in total and it made a world of difference on my W202 C230K. It was sloppy to begin with as you described.

Unless you car has gone over 200,000 hard miles, I really wouldn't be suspecting the gearbox, they were pretty solid on w202's (the 230k's had more failures because of the torque, but that was still at very high miles)

My C230K manual box destroyed itself after 150,000 miles, at least half of that was motorway miles.

As said, I'd start with checking the easy and cheap stuff like the shifter bushes on the rods and the engine/gearbox mounts :)

FWIW, the manual boxes on W202s like yours were never all that great, poor shift quality even when they were newish cars IMHO - maybe compare it to another similar car so you know what to expect? :)

thanks everyone you have all made great points,im now able to sus out which glitches need to be put right and where to look,i had a vague idea, but your confirmations and knowledge has put me in the right direction, excellent stuff thankyou.

ps i spotted a sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet c180 w202 on pistonheads wonder if you agree ? 57k on the clock and looks rather nice for £1100

The manual 'box on your car tends to feel sloppy even when they were brand new. Check the selector bushes as suggested first.

First step is to change the rubbers on the gearbox lever end of the change rods. There are three of them as per the drawing below. #47.. #81.. #125. These may not be the correct part numbers. You will need your VIN for that. Also recommended are three retaining clips A 000 994 41 60 not in this drawing but usually rusty. This is an easy job got at from a pair of ramps.

box problem from finland..

Would it be possible that the parts that are shown below on the picture could modifirate to those kind of steelballs if those have been inside the box...because i found one piece that has been in my box(exactly hard round steelball..and i had problems with changing gears?Or is it some other part?
