Well, I got up nice bright and early today, went out and discovered that my "chain-type" oil filter wrench doesn't grip the cap. At all. (The setting on the chain is an "in-between gaps" and there is no space to move the wrench either way. Hence, I need to get the cap type, the one that looks like a VERY large socket...

I'm going to pass by Halfords in a bit, does anyone know what the size the cap on a W202, C180? I'm guessing 75m or 76mm, but my ruler isn't that accurate!

Thanks,
Michele

If it's the standard plastic cap it should have a secondary nut fitting on the top. 27mm single hex socket works just fine.

You might even get it off by hand if you wear a rubber glove for grip.

Wii! Got eveything done! If you haven't changed your oil yet, do it yourself! (This was my first time) The feeling is great once you've brought the oil down to the recycling center! (Fine, I'm an engineer, so I get a weird perverted pleasure from all things mecchanical...)

The halfords right next to me had nothing, but the one near northolt had a VERY friendly and helpful guy (Peter on his badge) - he wasn't your typical college student earning a living. He was in his mid-50's I'de guess and very knowledgeable. He recomended a 76mm, 14flute for the oil filter but said that they also had this 3-pronged thingy that connected to a 3/8" wrench - it worked! (and reminded me vaguely of a borg-accesory) He also recomended some ramps they had there, or some axle stands (9.99 for a pair of 2T axle-stands - I went for the ramps @ £31.99 for the pair)

Dieselman: the cap is metal, steel I would guess, and though it has a tiny "nipple" on top, there is nothing that looks anything near a hex socket; maybe we're thinking of different parts? I tightened it by hand, with a rubber glove as you recomended - that worked great! (the three-pronged tool doesn't do tightening). I did a 15 min test drive and there are no leaks ;)

Next weeked I'm doing the pollen filter, air filter, fuel filter and if I have time checking the brakes and clutch. Speaking of which, where can I get the clutch tool? The little slim-jim like thing to check the clutch thickness without dismantling it? Do I need to make it as Haynes says or is there an underground market for merc-tools?

Thanks again,
Michele
