W210 E320cdi, worth restoring?

Engine - Injectors, Turbo, fuel pump, timing chain tensioner and possibly the chain itself for peace of mind (bearing in mind it'll be around 250k at this point) Exhaust system, maybe stainless. Replace hoses and vacuum pipes and possibly ditch the viscous fan seeing as it's power and economy sapping!

- OM613 is bullet proof. 250K mikes is nothing! Test the injectors and get them refurbed. Check free play in turbo...and keep servicing it.:thumb:
Hoses and vac pipes, good plan!
The mechanical fan is removed on mine:thumb:

Gearbox - Full rebuild, clutch packs, pump etc

- Again, the 722.6 will last 250K miles. Is yours actually faulty? If not, ATF and filter (including draining the TC)

Differential - Remove/Inspect replace parts if necessary

- Unless it's noisy, just change the oil.

Suspension - Replace everything. Subframe bushes, arms etc etc. All OEM parts.

- Yes, that will make the biggest difference in the ride and handling. Also consider all the engine and gearbox mounts and flex discs.
Whilst sub frames are dropped replace all brake pipes and SLS lines?

Good luck anyway! Knowing what I know now, I'd buy a 2009 211 320cdi for £7K.:D

It is not worth restoring no matter how long you want to keep it...one accident will write it off and you will lose most of what you have put into it.

This is very true, and it does excite me the thought of a newer car. I love the S212 although not had the pleasure of driving one. 2 of the blokes I work with, have coupé versions, one being a 250cdi and the other a 350cdi. They are both really happy with them and report no major issues so far.

Cheers for the input guys, I have a couple of years to keep the old girl running. MOT due in April, so that could be an interesting time but we shall see!

Whats sort of MPG do people get from the 350cdi lump? Will they still do 40mpg on the motorway?

Cheers

Ben

I understand what you are trying to say, but if we all thought like that then there would be no old cars left on the road, someones gotta restore them :)

If you do your own work, go ahead and restore it. Don't worry too much about it getting written off. If they write it off, make them give you the salvage and use it a parts car. I've done this before and know plenty of people that do the same.

It is an option, although I don't really have the space for a parts car. Its not impossible, but it would mean that i would have to park on the road and I'd have a beaten up shell sat there for god knows how long!
Something may well go very wrong by the time I have to make the fix or sell decision! :thumb:

Early ones....just about. Mine used to struggle to get passed 38mpg even on a steady run, sure you could higher for a few miles, but as soon as you start hitting traffic that is constantly changing speed or hit a few roundabouts etc. it would drop down again.

The later one seemed to get 40+ quite easily, but I have only had one as a loan car.

Having said that, speaking to my mate last night, he swapped his 350cdi for a new E250cdi and he said he is getting virtually the same MPG wise, he averaged 35 in the 350 and is at 36mpg in the 250 after 2 years. That is calculated, his OBC shows 42. He is not impressed. Although he has the larger fuel tank so does get 600 miles between fill ups.

Let me know if you need a gearbox , I bought a e320cdi as a donor car for parts to finish my 55 .
It drove beautiful and faultless it has covered 125k .
I own a couple of nice cars but none of them compares with my old W210 ,I'd keep it if I was you.

What parts did you take off? Are you scrapping the rest?

Did you think it quite quick, compared to your usual AMG fare?:D

As a famous Scots philosopher once said YE CANNAE WHACK ENTROPY For £6,000 you could buy a nice [YOUNGER! ] Volvo XC70
Volvo XC70 2.4 D5 SE 5dr

I just couldn't bring myself round to owning a Volvo. I'm just not a "Volvo driver". I will however scour the market when it comes round to renewal time! Still very much loving the S212 350cdi of around 11/12 years. Love the facelift even more, but I hear they stopped the 7 seat option from then on? 7seats aren't a priority but are very handy!
