Hi

I am looking for 8-10 year old E320CDI Black saloon (or almost any colour estate) with light coloured interior.

I came across 183,000m Long Wheel Base Limousine but based on the pictures it does not seem to be too long. I am quite worried about buying anything non-standard.

So the question is are Long Wheel Base Limousine more problematic than standard W211 and in particular:
1. Are they more prone to breakdowns/faults?
2. Are they more difficult and expensive to repair?
3. Are they much more expensive to ensure?
4. Do they accelerate less well due to larger mass etc?
5. Are they worse at handling speed bumps / uneven road (even with my W210 Elegance which has higher clearance than Avantgarde I quite often hit the bottom)?
6. Are they worse at handling when taking corners etc, parking?

Is 183,000 miles too much for 2055 E320CDI. I understand E300TD had a reputation of lasting 500,000 miles, what are the views on E320CDIs?

Also I could not find the Long Wheel Base car on Parker's Facts and Figures is the model so rare and unusual that even Parker's don't have data on it?

Thanks a lot for replies!

Interesting, would like to see pics. Has it got an extra pair of doors, or just an extra bit in the middle for extra legroom for the rear passengers?

If the car is too long, it may not go on some ramps, when getting it serviced, so may require to take it to a specialist.

I've done over 200,000 miles in the two E320 CDi's I had, both pre-facelift and facelift, which came around 2005/2006. (I had a 2003 and a 2007 one)

No extra doors - I presume more space for passengers at the back but the only thing mentioned is Long Wheel Base Limousine. based on the pictures not much difference to standard. (See attached picture)

Did you do just over 200,000 miles (which would give just 17k more miles on this one) or well over? Did you have to do major Engine/Transmission etc work to get it past 200,000 miles?

That picture is just a standard W211
Sounds like the seller claiming things which aren't actually true to add the sale.

Agreed...you can plainly see the front and back doors are the same length.

Indeed, that looks like a normal one.

Maybe you can get an interior shot?

It may have optional extras for the rear passengers, such as 4-zone climate, rear heated seats, rear door airbags, sunblinds, and the seller just decided to call it a LWB limousine to bump up the price?

Pre-faclift went to about 211,000 miles before I sold it. Had to have a new turbo.

Facelift went to 234,000 miles, auxiliary belt broke twice, new glow plugs, and engine mounts.

Otherwise both were relatively ok.

Glow plugs on CDI? I thought CDIs start fine without them. On my E300TD 1998 one failed a year ago - all I had to do is warm it up 10 seconds past the light going out and apply accelerator when starting. I think recently a second one went out so now I need to apply starter motor for about 20 seconds.

But in respect of CDI I heard it can start without major problems even when all glow plugs fail?

Attaching the best available picture showing saloon space. I think at most 10cm more space but difficult to judge based on the picture.

But what worries me that Long Wheel Base models are not widely known here, which could mean I would be buying something that is kind of one-off rather than tried-and-tested in mass.

That is a standard model, nothing LWB about it.

Doesn't even have the rear climate controls. Unless its dirt cheap with that mileage there are plenty of others out there.

Get the VIN, let's pull out the datacard :)

Mercedes-Benz E Class E320 CDI Avantgarde [Euro 4] 4dr Tip Auto 3.2

Well it has heated seats, Memory seats.... and I would hope bi-Xenons or at least Xenons. So not just most basic spec

My requirements are quite specific E320CDI, Only Black, Interior not dark and not dirty.

The other car neaby is this one. But I think I viewed from that dealer a couple of years ago and it is kind of bedroom dealer

Mercedes-Benz E Class 3.0CDI E320 CDI Avantgarde 4dr 7G-Tronic

And it does seem to me that in the first one the rear door a bit longer the the second so it is probably LWB.

1st car is just a standard (non LWB) W211, no particularly high spec, other than the heated seats is just plain Avantgarde spec. Also has a Halfords aftermarket rear badge.

The 2nd car, a facefilt model is better in every way, it also has the COMAND sat nav. Facelifts generally have all the bugs ironed out.

That 1st car is not LWB, companies like Binz made LWB versions for funeral cars etc and they were huge.

Thanks a lot! Also noticed the (in my view) ugly rear badge that was also putting me off...

May be will view the second one though had quite bad experience viewing card in Luton. I also viewed from this dealer but do not quite recall the extent of my experience with him apart from that he is kind of bedroom dealer.

Its not even a bargain with that mileage.

That facelift model is the one to look at, better in every way.

Phoned the dealer .... they lost the key ... available for viewing in a week.... What else have they lost?

The strange thing is I have recollections of something extremely similar in Luton... Viewed probably 4-5 cars and none of them were a marginal or hesitant no. Twelve mile journey (but still 30-40 minutes each way) but always felt like it was a total waste. And also a recollection of a car advertised in Luton that was a bargain but could not view for a month due to one reason given by the dealer or another untill it was "sold".

Found car very similar (if not the same) as the one that "disappeared" from Luton (on the phone told that the key is lost and will be bale to view next week and then removed autotrader add within minutes).

Also found this one, albeit in Luton, low mileage, comes with warranty. Hopefully proper dealer. Unfortunately interior is black and it is E280CDI and not E320CDI.
Used Mercedes-benz E Class Saloon 3.0td E280 Avantgarde 4dr 7g-tronic in Luton, Bedfordshire | Jan Autos Ltd

Are E280CDIs a lot worse specs wise? If I get it tuned to E320CDI power will insurers "love" me so much that will charge me a lot more than for E320CDI?
