W211 E270CDI noisy autobox

Hi - my first post so go easy with me!

Recently bought (long story, will post it in general!) a 2003 E270CDI Classic Auto and got an interesting noise coming from the autobox.

At low speeds it sounds like a whining groaning noise, in first and second gear mostly below 2000 rpm. Loud on the coastdown too, and very noticable from the outside.

MB dealer has reset the gearbox computer and it's smoother now but still making the same noise.

Also there's quite a bit more turbo noise than I'd expect (whistle outside, rumble inside).

Two things then - one, the radiator issue - how do I tell (can't find any labels) if I could be affected by the ATF contamination, or could the gearbox be something else? and two, are the turbos normally noisy on the 270 (I drove a few before buying this one and never noticed) - it's noticabl y louder than the A170cdi I had before and the Toyota Verso D4D I still have as well!

The Valeo issue affected cars up to 30-09-03.

Cars that have been fitted with a modified rad have a white circle (dot) on top of the oil cooler on the water box.

I've got a C270 and the turbo is unnoticable - all I can hear is the wastegate!!

Well, I have no dot. Have it booked in on Thursday for a glowplug relay - so lets see what they say about the rad / gearbox thing then...

update...

groaning noise / twitchy steering - new power steering pump - sorted

radiator - had a glycol check, not a problem apparrently. Looks like the radiator has been replaced at some point (from the looks of it along with the bumper and a headlamp...hmmmm...)

gearbox issues (slow to engage reverse, jerky 1-2 3-4 3-2) replaced valve chest, fluid and filter - see how it goes.

However - turbo noise - anyone got any ideas? To me it's the noisiest turbo I've had (and it's my fourth), dealer says it's normal but doesn't have another E270 to compare. My Volvo was quieter, and that was running chipped power and 120k miles, the A class made no turbo noise at all, our Toyota has a bit of whistle when pushed but not other noise. Wouldn't want to be faced with an out of warranty claim for the charger...

What sort of noise?? Just a very loud whistle, or something more untoward like a groan or whine, or something else??

Edit - Just read the first post in the thread. Sorry!!

The ML has the same engine, and the turbo whistles really loudly, and always has. Never got any worse, just very vocal which I quite like.

I would be interested to hear how you get on with the transmission noise. Was it permanent or occasional?
