W211 Tips On Buying An E270 or E320 cdi

this Ahole on ebay has now said he does not want to sell to me. Because its too much hassle. I asked him about swapping the wheels and i said i would go over tonight if it was dry, its now raining, i said i wont be over tonight. He said he will let the auction run because of this huge hassle.

I sent a bit of a long cheeky text to him saying how i thought he would appreciate a serious buyer who has the cash, also not having to deal with the nutters on ebay who bid and dont turn up, then you need to relist blah blah. He has now said i can go and view tomorrow night. I feel like telling him to shove it but there is no other nice ones for this price within 75 miles of me.

If the car was serviced 18 months ago, its due another. Knock off another £150/200.

This seller sounds a bit of a pain and I'm not sure I'd pursue it further.
The "Brake system indicates a fault" doesn't sound good either. Possible SBC pump problem and a £900 bill.

He says its last oil change was 6 months ago 12/12/16 he checked his paperwork. Previous service was full fluid change inc brakes & transmission, this was 18 months ago. The service day light is on he says. He says the brake warning is because of non genuine pads and its past 2 mots like that.

He is a pain but like i said, not many decent examples to choose from, they can be too expensive, traders or dodgy doorstep dealers, too high miles, not looked after and so on.

I wouldn't believe the fact that non OEM pads being fitted causes a brake warning to appear. That is BS.
Be very wary if you decide to look this one over. He sounds like a fly boy selling it. The fake Brabus wheels and 5.5AMG wing badges decided that:D

I appreciate the model and your budget make them harder to come by, but I've driven to Northampton, Knebworth and Chelmsford from Bournemouth to buy privately and its about trusting the seller.
In the case of the one you are looking at, I don't trust him to be honest in the true condition of the car.

He says the car came like that so he is not responsible for the badges and wheels lol. He should have removed the badges.

The warning is white, visit workshop he says so it sounds like the 'service brake visit workshop warning' in white. From things i have read this can be reset or its a cheap fix replacing a brake switch. Does it sound like something to worry about.

I just recently moved to England from Scotland, the choice of good cars privately is very poor there. I have lost count the amount of cars i bought in England, getting a one way train or plane to Bristol, Leicester, Derby, Exeter and so on. Im extremely thorough with my questions and phone calls, at the end of the day every car i bought it turned out the owner had been lying or bull****ting to some degree. I could write a book about my woes. The most honest seller was a guy off the bmw 5 series forum, he sold me a £650 focus i went to England for it was for my current girlfriend at that time. Just now i dont want to go through all that and so im concentrating on something within maybe 50 to 70 miles. I would travel for a forum car as these guys tend to be more honest but you still cant trust forum members 100% i have learned.

A reset for the SBC pump depends on the fault code shown. C249F it may be possible. Otherwise its a new pump depending on what the exact fault is.
Here is a possible scenario
W211 ''Service Brake - Visit Workshop!" - Mercedes-Benz Owners' Forums

Did you spot this one? Looks a decent example and probably going by the new car on the drive, no longer needed.
MERCEDES E320 CDI AVANTGARDE PANORAMIC ROOF 2004 NEW MOT HPI CLEAR | eBay
There is a phone number in the ad. If the seller sees you are genuine you may be able to strike a deal.

so basically i should not buy this car unless a diagnostic has been done to find out why it has the brake warning, is that correct?

maybe thats why he has not been using the car much, who knows, suspicious. I had to ask about any fault it may have, he never offered this information.

That car looks nice but London is a bit far for me at the moment. Its different if they write a great advert with loads of information and loads of great pics, this inspires some confidence compared to a few lines and you need to ask everything and drag it out of the seller. He sold a bmw very recently so maybe not a private seller, he does not mention anything about his ownership of the car and what he has done when. The other advert he refers to the car as 'she' oh my god.

Yes, the car needs the fault codes reading, preferably with MB STAR diagnostics. If the car is in London, go to Wayne Gates in Harrow to check it over, but I can see the seller agreeing to that and the checkover will cost.

I would give it a miss to be honest. Too much doesn't ring true.

BTW, in post 24 you mention the "service day light is on" That means its due a service whatever he has claimed. If he did an oil change a while ago, he didn't do anything else, nor reset the service indicator. Therefore it needs a service.

Sorry those cars were too far away. I was mistakenly under the impression you were in London:doh: Whereabouts are you located?

the one on ebay with the panoramic roof, i said might be a doorstep trader, i text asking if the car was still for sale, he said yes right away, i then asked if the car was registered in his name, to his home address and where the car can be viewed, also how long had he owned it. No reply lol

Im now sure the gumtree one is genuine private either. everything in capitals and trader speak like 'THE CAR BENEFITS FROM FULL MERCEDES-BENZ SERVICE HISTORY'

its a night mare

^ Yes, its a minefield out there.

Coventry based, im staying in hotels at the moment and starting a new job soon at Rolls Royce, its jet engines they do here not cars. So west midlands area is good. I only find autotrader, ebay, gumtree worth checking, pistonheads is rubbish now, any other suggestions apart from this forum?

the one in Leicester on gumtree got sold this morning for £2800 the owner said

i asked him about the diagnostic check, he says what am i on about nothing needs fixed lol.

Used Cars

thanks for your help, i dont really want to buy from a dealer or any kind, doorstep or garage, they are mostly lying scum. ALso that car has cloth interior. When i search for adverts i always select private and not traders, you can do this on ebay, gumtree and autotrader.

the first one looks real nice, the advert says its a 2004 but the reg plat says 53, i think the price is too high for a 53 plate at £3300

as mentioned the second one has short mot, VIEWING BY APPOINTMENT ONLY, sounds like a trader.
53 Reg is from September 2003 until March 1st 2004 when it changes to '04.

You're at a price point sadly where you're going to have to be on your toes, the best tip I always give to anyone who asks is that you can tell an awful lot by the tyres that are on; if they're all different and cheap crap then run a mile, if they've got four premium brands then there's the better possibility that it'll have been looked after.
