Wanted - an interesting toy for sub £2k

That's just an XJS , not an XJRS

I thought 5.3 V12 were R's too? Then moved to 6 litres towards the end.
Still learning about them though.
Why do you think its not one and will avoid?
Thanks! :)

Also to add Merc Csowrth still very high on wants list too.

For a sub £2k fun car, I'd buy a 190 Cosworth that needs a bit of tinkering.

I think you are probably right - they are undervalued iconic cars.

While still open to ideas I think its now a case of finding the right XJS,RR HSE or 190 Cosworth.

I am trying to do a deal on a 190 at the mo - we will see.

Not in a desparate rush but would like to find the right car within a month or so.

Keep the ideas coming though everyone :bannana:

Sub-£2k 190 2.3/2.5-16s (aka 16v 'Cosworth') that just need tinkering don't really exist anymore.

£2k will buy you a restoration project - a car that needs thousands spent on it. Body rot is the biggest issue with most these days IMHO. Budget on engine work too unless there's evidence of this - many are on their last legs and don't run properly. And on a more minor note, interiors in good condition are hard to come by nowadays - as are unmolested cars without tasteless mods etc.

Good usable cars that can be the basis of tinkering/rolling restos are about twice this amount - £4/5k or so.

Not the sort of car you buy casually - you really need to do your homework beforehand :thumb:

I agree and rot scares me.
Something like this would be a good starting place:
MERCEDES 190E COSWORTH 2.3 16 SPARES OR REPAIR COSWORTH 190E 2.3 16V DRIVES | eBay

I have found another with no rot thats been siting with a good interior that needs some mechanicals - trying to work something out on that as will be a lot cheaper than rebuilding the body. I am just not going to do rust unless its a really special car.

Almost all of them will be rotting away in some way or another - they hide it very well.

Have seen the eBay car, the seller is registered in this forum IIRC. I wouldn't believe that there is no rust at all, and if I'm honest the car sets off a few alarm bells to me. Hasn't been run since 2007, no logbook, no MOT, engine looks 'got at', interior covered in fake wood, wrong wheels, tacky plate/grille etc.

That's exactly the sort of car that will soak up more cash than a nicer car could be bought for IMHO. Fair enough if you want a go but be prepared to spend much more than the purchase price getting it anywhere near reasonably good condition.

Through the 190 forum I was offered an unmolested, all original, full black leather interior, loads of service history 190 2.3-16v for £2k about two month ago. I didn't buy it because I didn't have any space for it, which in hindsight I regret doing.

Details please Lee?

£2k sounds too cheap. I can think of one car that you might be thinking of, but it didn't have full leather and was more than £2k - over in Suffolk?

Trust me, I've been buying/selling/working on/driving these cars for the last 10+ years, £2k is restoration project money usually - so unless someone was selling one half price for some strange reason it probably needed a lot of work :thumb:

He put it up for sale after I spoke to him for £3k iirc, I promised to come down with a transporter, pay him with no dramas and be on my way and he said he'd accept £2k.

Very nice chap, he didn't have the space for it and that's why he was selling.

I've still got his details somewhere, although he might have felt that it was undervalued and wants nearer the £3k mark (which was still cheap if you ask me)

I've still got some photos on my computer somewhere if you're interested Will?

So the Reliant Kitten's definitely a no-no then?;)

Tempting, but no ;)

W140 or C140 v12 ??
Can get a nice one for 2k

yes, been keeping an eye out on those. Would be very happy with either 4 door or the coupe.

Would definately have one of those.

The Middle East plated 6.0 AMG at Mercedes World is amazing.

Totally agree on the possible costs, but this is a project for me. I don't want a minter or even close.
Love the fettling - its the whole point of my hobby cars I have had over the years.
Doing it yourself also means you know its done right.
Not concerned about the paperwork - they are a business and its quite feasible paperwork has been lost for a car that has sat.

Its a possible back up if nothing better found - I think I have found another that looks more promising. (still looking though guys for anything interesting!)
