What Have You Done To Your Merc Today?

My mechanic re sealed two rocker cover gaskets, new exhaust rubber, new gear selector bush on my w202 c43.

After deep cleaning & waxing the wheels I treated mine to a handwash - the first in many weeks. I was hoping to be able to apply a layer of ceramic polish but family duties & rain are threatening to stop play.

The wheel wax did its job last week - I spent Christmas at a big family gathering in Dorset. I was driving around in some biblical conditions and all the standing water helped keep the wheels looking much cleaner than before. As ever, the E was the perfect place in which to waft through the storms, loaded to the gunwales with Christmas food and presents. I'll have had it 5 years in March and still love it.

I've now got a few days off and see if I can find the time to apply my ceramic polish. In an ideal world, I'd decontaminate the paint first but I usually find that my definition of "time off" is somewhat different from that of my wife and kids. I'd happily spent several hours with my headphones on giving the car's bodywork a proper going over - but that's a bit antisocial so I might just cut straight to the polish this time.

One thing that does work for me is washing it in stages - it sits around a lot I can often do this. I did two of the wheels on Wednesday during my lunch break and the other two on Thursday. Today's the perfect day to do the paint but I've promised to go on a long walk. Musn't grumble, family first and all that.

Which wheelwax did you use ?

Poorboy's. I still had some from when I originally bought the wheels a few years ago.

The general consensus seems to be that, as wheel waxes go, it's decent.

In the summer, though, I'll do some G Tecniq Wheel Amour.

Costs a lot more but seems to last a lot longer.

Yesterday (rather than today) I checked and adjusted the tyre pressures on all of our cars which took me much longer than I would have ever thought! I usually do them one at a time.

Also I finally got round to installing the CTEK comfort connectors (using the M8 eyelets) on the ones with batteries which are easy to reach - I’ve been using the crocodile clips.

I hooked them all up to their CTEK chargers too, the first time they’ve all been on charge at the same time, helped by the fact that I got a bit carried away on Amazon and ordered three more!

My mind enjoyed it, but my body didn’t! More than four hours of kneeling, stooping, bending, and stretching made me feel my age and reminded me why I should do them one by one!

I’m well behind! Two days ago, I had one serviced. Can’t be many 15 year old cars with Full Mercedes-Benz Service History. Proper FMBSH too, every single additional item has been performed on time or early.

Well they have charged you for them all. 😉 😀
Main dealer charged us for 2 x Pollen filter and never changed it at all.

Any MOT failures or advisories?
That may give a better clue.

Yes, two advisories this year: one weeping rear damper and slight corrosion on the front brake flexi hoses/pipes, all replaced.

Which advisories would you expect to see if service items had been charged for but not performed?

I wouldn't expect any to be honest.
We always put our cars into the Main Dealer for a "Service & MOT", never a "MOT & Service".

We had failures on a W212 such as.

<3 Years & <11k Miles
  • offside and nearside front tyre's worn on outer edge's
<4 Years <16k Miles
  • Nearside Front brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (3.5.1i)
  • Nearside Rear Tyre worn close to the legal limit (4.1.E.1)
  • Offside Rear Tyre worn close to the legal limit (4.1.E.1)

By this point we gave up using the main dealer.
It was clear a service to them was changing (or not) the bits they could charge for and not checking anything else.

Didn’t they give you the Red-Amber-Green health check results showing things like the tyre tread depths and percentage brake wear? Every dealer I’ve ever used give me those with the service or repair invoice.

I handwashed it yesterday. But then (a) is started drizzling and (b) I remembered that the QPR game was on the TV at 2.00.

Today I hope to get the decontamination done and the polish on.
