What Have You Done To Your Merc Today?

well finally got around to changing auxilary belt , pulleys and a new tensioner on my c320 cdi.
Went on to faithful Youtube to give me some idea beacause not a lot of space and but none of them show how to take rad fan out and now understand why what a pain.
lovely sunshine 3 and half hrs now I know how

Filled up the CLK using the Esso app. Went very well, much quicker than queueing up inside faffing about with cards and till receipt.

Highs and lows of buying cheap eBay replacement parts.

Replaced the headlight washer pump. Febi Bilstein according to the box. Now works perfectly. Previous owner of 17 years said they'd never worked so for the first time since around 2006 it's sorted and took about half an hour.

Fitted some replacement buttons/knobs for the a/c controls. Originals had gone a bit nasty and sticky. Perfect fit and look good.

Next job was the third brake light. Cracks on the outside and on removal it had obviously been repaired before.

Unfortunately my luck didn't hold and the eBay replacement was a poor fit with a rubber seal that I had absolutely no faith in. It's going back.

I was going to give the car a good clean too but as there's now a big hole in the boot lid that will have to wait.

Put the original brake light in and washed it anyway. Like @MissyD I find it very therapeutic. First wash since I picked it up last weekend too. Gives you a chance to view the bodywork in detail.

Driving along I got the ESP defective and other alerts related to the brakes. So I turned into a side street and called the RAC at 4:20pm. Unfortunately they were very busy and it took nearly 6 hours to get me home which was under 2 miles away.
So it's now time to call up an indy and find out if it is the dreaded SBC pump or something a bit less expensive that needs fixing. With only 86k on the clock I'm hoping it is not the former.

Mileage and SBC don't go together unfortunately.

Four new tyres for the S212 - in my never ending quest for quietness I’ve gone for the new Bridgestone Turanza 6 over my normal Goodyear Eagle F1. The Turanza in tests are supposed to be significantly quieter with decent, if not the best wet and dry performance. I figured it’s not like I ever push the limits of traction of the wagon!

Part two of the quietness quest involved scouring the web for S212 rattle cures! It’s not that it rattles much but ive been tracing a couple of irritating noises coming from the rear. I found the silver handle for the boot floor rattled so my little gas soldering iron closed up the gap round the pivot which cured it. I also found one known culprit is the 60 part of the 60/40 rear seat back. Two rattles sorted here. The carpet cover is loose against the metal seat back and can rattle so removing a couple of bolted on attachments I was able to spray in some carpet adhesive which sorted it.

The big, common rattle though comes from inside the seat. There’s a metal bar that can vibrate and rattle against the seat back. If you thump the back of the seat (from inside the boot) you can hear it rattle and “buzz”. I had to prise out the seat cover at the base then insert some foam between the metal bar and seat back. Quite an easy job and seems to have worked so looking forward to the road test!

It must be like a Rolls Royce in there now after that lot 👌🏻

Its definitely much better - this is after i spent ages adding a load of sound deadening as well. The trouble is, as i discovered - is that if you remove one noise then the next loudest noise becomes more noticeable. Bit of a slippery slope! Have to say though the tyres are really nice - i wouldn't probably go for them on anything a bit sporty but they suit the E Wagon well. Looking forward to my next Euro trip in a month...

Just back from seing the guys at Command Online for installation of a Autowatch Ghost Immobiliser. What a cracking experience, top service, helpful, knowledgeable and happy to take time out to chat. Can't thank them enough and would highly recommend to all.

Mine is very quiet (the Airmatic helps) but that just means that when there is a rattle or a squeak it's super-noticeable.

Once every six months I get a fizz from a little round vent thing on the top RHS of the dash - not sure what it does but I if I put my finger on it it stops for a very long time.

On the central dash there's one tiny creak where one bit of trim is rubbing against another.

When I next make it down to ComandOnline I'll ask them to have a look. It's probably as simple as popping it off and spraying some lubricant on it.

What those goes don't know about dismantling and rebuilding dashboards isn't work knowing.

Anyway, one occasional fizz and one very quiet creak from a car that's 13 years old. Brilliant.

Same place I had mine fitted. Highly recommended.

Drove mine home. Coolant leak, oil leak and creaky suspension all sorted now along with the mega service the other week. Bit of paint next.

I spent a while talking to the garage owner about how I'd been struggling to find anything newer on the basis that newer cars tend to have a worse ride, look a bit shouty and can be generally more troublesome. He pretty much agreed, esp on the latter point.

I broached the subject of an XK with him again and has main advice was to proceed with caution; yes the XK5.0 is a similar recipe to the E500 just in a smaller shell but "it's not built the same way as your Merc".

I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever sell it......
