What Have You Done To Your Merc Today?

I've had a look on eBay at motors and fans and they can be sourced much cheaper. Going back tomorrow to pick it up again (no point in leaving it there when no parts are in yet) and going to take to them about exact findings and post numbers and go from there.

Parts secured and ordered for much less than original prices. Blower motor and stat needed, Merc part numbers given by the garage and should be with me by the end of the week.

Then to book in again...

Thought I would be do some preventative maintenance, so took the actuator off the E class and drove 20 mins down the road to Essex Turbos feeling pleased with myself , only to find they don’t refurb an actuator unless it’s attached to a turbo .
I‘ve just bought a refurb one from Turbovanes on eBay so I should have it in a couple of days .
There was nothing wrong with mine but at 140k miles I’m sure it’s getting a bit loose and there is more turbo delay these days .

Great, another task to add to my hobby list. Which is, as it turns out, a good job W1ghty posted this as a reminder.

I've just done a lunchtime cabin filter change for Mahle LAO 413. Fit was good, even if the manufacturer quality could have been better. I see that it was last changed on 1st Jan 2022 (because obviously I write this on my filters when I fit them) and therefore I'd done myself out of an exciting New Year's Day activity by changing a couple of months early. Luckily, I'll be able to fill that gap with a turbo actuator strip down, clean and re-greasing. What a start to the New Year

This time of year you have to do the jobs when it’s not raining and blowing a gale .
I’m busy writing more “crazy” lists of stuff as we speak

With the actuator, I think there are 5 bolts on the back , but 2 of them hold the bracket , not the actuator .
Stuff some cloth down in the gaps to avoid dropping anything . Only then loosen the bolts first and when you wiggle the actuator you can see which ones you need to remove .
One of the bolts needs the arm disconnected first to make space for the socket .

Already watched several videos and I've got one particular vid where the chaps shows exactly which three.

Just need to order some high temp grease. Annoyingly, I do have a little aluminium tube of just the stuff, somewhere...
Already looked but can't find it, so I'll have to buy some more. No doubt when I get it and store it in a safe place, I'll open up said safe drawer/box, only to find a half used tube of high temp grease!

got the SLK back from F1 Autocentre who did the equivalent of an MB B service (including re-setting the service interval to 15k miles!!) for £260, £150 less than the quote from a local high end vehicles place I've used before. Only slight downside is that they cannot update the DSR, but I'm not impressed with the DSR and keep a file of invoices for ANY work done on the car!

£139 at mb guildford for an A service which as you know does not differ much from a B service.

There's an air filter and a load more checks in a B service than an A, and as I mentioned before Guildford is a long way from Ashford and a different franchise to MB Ashford (which IIRC is Lookers).

My glc b service it just had, consisted of 2 air filters, 1 pollen filter , 1 dust filter, brake fluid change , fuel filter change. Nothing like an A .

Those additional items mentioned by @OneForTheRoad may concide with an A service too, but would not be part of the A service price, just as they aren’t part of the B service price. If they’re due on the schedule then they must be completed to renew breakdown cover

Ah, the mystery of Mercedes-Benz service schedules. So much smoke and mirrors. I worked out my own on a spreadsheet .

Do you mean a spreadsheet which tells you what’s due at any point based upon the Mercedes schedule so you don’t have to work it out each time, or you’ve come up with your own intervals for things like spark plugs, transmission fluid, coolant, etc which not based upon the Mercedes schedule?

It uses mercedes miles and time intervals for A and B services plus all the extras which have their own schedules.
Another thing, an A service plus Mot is more thorough and cheaper than a B service.

As some preventative maintenance for the E class at 137k miles , I ordered an exchange actuator unit from Turbovanes . Fitted and test drove it , all good .
The car now has no delay in take off when you stamp on the gas .

So, I couldn't wait until January to remove and strip down the turbo actuator. It's like leaving your favorite beer in the fridge for months: not going to happen.

Anyway, an easy enough job, but despite youtube videos, I had to remove the batwing to retrieve the unit. No big deal, as it gave me chance to inspect the turbo seal, which is in good order.

I was surprised that the inside of my turbo actuator was in very, very clean condition. I did give it a good rinse around the worm gear with some electrical cleaner, but very little black dust/residue was present.

It looked like there was zero grease present on the gears. I used a cheap artists brush to apply a thin film of silicone grease. After much searching online for what grease to use, I opted for this because it's kind to plastics and is good for up to around 200°C.

All went back fine.
The arm into the turbo unit to control the vanes is smooth and moves freely, so no concerns there.

The old girl is at the car hospital to have a small bodywork issue sorted . She had the rust done around the windscreen a while ago but recently I noticed a small crack just above the area they'd worked on. The hospital said they'd sort it for me, so she's back there for a while.

Up and out early with Baby D for a trip to the Cotswolds to view some cars. Baby D selected the chariot of choice but we had to abort because the brake pads are rusted on to the discs and we didn’t have time to sort.

So we took what has become our favourite long distance lad & dad car. Roof down both directions, 209 miles in 4h 36m at 33.6 MPG which is outstanding. Most of the miles were motorway cruising but some were spirited at each end.

Great day for driving I suspect lots of people are using heir weekend and special cars this weekend before hibernating. There were more friendly drivers than usual, chatting in Starcuks, waving on the road, and just a little spirited convoying.

Hello
Sorry for being so forward but do you mind me asking what car that was, please?
I have a gle and have considered changing to another, new/er gle but have thought about
an E class convertible but sitting low down now puts me off, and me being over 60 and
this car not having the presence of the gle. The S class coupe ith a pan roof is close but
I'd fear the maintenance on that plus its very, very long.

TBH, I need two cars but it would be wasting money as the gle is hardly driven as it is.

That car was an SLK 55, wonderful little cars.

Remind me, is yours a 167 generation GLE?
