What to do when you find your old car on e-Bay and it's been clocked?!

What you certainly can do is to 'watch' the auction , then , when the car has been sold , quickly contact the winning bidder through eBay and tell them about the mileage when you owned it .

I have to say that it certainly looks like your old car, Chris. Remember when we were comparing notes back in May I think it was?

All the little bits which are not on mine, but were on yours (and vice versa), are there on that one.

Edit: Took me too long to type that little lot - we have already established the ID beyond doubt. Doh! :o

Many people don`t even do an hpi check

I wouldn't , unless the car was costing me significantly more than a grand or so - which most cars I buy don't .

You wont be able to get the winning bidders Id.

Its time to call HPI, the Police and trading standards.

Forget ebay they will simply alert him, the auction will end and nothing will happen except some poor punter will get the car from a local advert.

Yep, I certainly remember that little metal rectangular box thing just underneath the windscreen, which we think it could be the aerial/sensor for the keyless go.

+1 Totally agreed.

Print out the ebay listing in case it 'disappears'.

Need to get his address so I guess someone needs to 'buy' it.

Even if it is withheld in the auction view , haven't looked at the link but on many auctions it is visible , it will most certainly appear in the seller's feedback profile once either party leaves feedback for the transaction .

I agree trading standards should be involved asap - they will do the rest , possibly even involving a 'sting' by 'buying ' the vehicle themselves .

MOT history will also reveal the true mileage and this cannot be hidden or falsified .

Heres a thought. How about we get the seller to bring it along to Jay's GTG on Sunday and we 'inspect it' whilst someone calls the old bill?

There's always the possibility the current seller has been duped & has no knowledge the car has been clocked.

I have asked for the chassis no but he doesnt have it to hand and will hpi the car when i go to view it!

Wait a minute!!!

A thought has just crossed my mind. Before we go and get all excited, the only piece of information which alludes to the car being clocked is the item description. There are no photos which include a view of the odometer.

It may be that the only thing which happens is rapped knuckles for a misleading description.

There is no proof that the car itself has been clocked.

I've asked him to confirm the mileage:)

Hmm true, but I certainly didn't get £7,995 for it! Also that's (coincidentally), is exactly the same price I paid for the car in Feb 2009 with 140,000 miles on the clock!

By the way, thanks everyone for their replies! :thumb: The thread is only about 45 min old, and is already 3 pages long!

I also got the old logbook to hand, before I put personalised plates on it, too (which is where I obtained the VIN asked earlier).
