What was the first car you drove and what car did you officially lean to drive in?

First drive was in a friend's VW Beetle (Type 1, not the Golf-based thing). Did most of my learning in my Mum's HB Viva and passed my test in my instructor's Opel Kadett C.

Triumph Herald 1200, off road & then legally wi an instructor. Funny thing,the off road bit was at East Kirkby ex-RAF aerodrome, in later years i also practised driving artics on there before i did my HGV test.

Drove first in an Anglia 105e, and did the test in a Datsun 2000 estate (about E class sized).

By myself at about 11 was an old Dodge pick up truck

Took a few more years before I was allowed in the cars!

1st Drive - Sunbeam Rapier saloon with overdrive (remember that?) on a disused airport aged 15 during a summer holiday job at a restaurant - Rapier belonged to the manager of the restaurant. Learnt and passed my test in 1967 in a Morris Minor 1000. First car was a 1962 Austin Seven (as the Austin versions of the Mini 850cc were badged then) - 8999 HA, pity I didn't put it on retention. Happy days!

1st drive Suzuki jimmy in Nairobi on holiday when I was 10. Took 3 lessons in a 93 Nissan sunny and sat the test in my mums e30 325i. The look on the testers face was priceless when he pointed at the bm and said " can you read the plate on that bmw " to which I replied "choose another car I'm sitting my test in that" lol. Then first car 88 F plate 1.0 polo 45bhp , slower than a week in jail.

E30, what a car to take your test in. Did the examiner get very nervous?

First drive and car was an mg midget in 1979.

First drive when I was 15 or 16 in my dad's Renault 12 on a disused airfield.
Took 6 lessons in a nasty mk1 Nissan Micra with a guy who had a massive moustache. I passed first time in my first car, a mk1 Ford Escort, after my instructor told me I wasn't ready for the test.

First car i drove (in 1968) was a Gordon Keeble . It was at the garage where i worked part time, when still a schoolboy. Luckily the boss did not find out , and i did not cause any damage driving about 1/2 mile around the block . Just as well because the boss was former rally driver "Tiny" Lewis , who was about six foot four . Bought my first car from the same garage , a 5 year old mini van for £40 . A mate of mine fixed the knackered exhaust valve ,skimmed the head etc for £2. For the record, i was sixteen when driving the Gordon Keeble "unofficially" , and the only vehicle i had used previously was my Lambretta.

1954 Austin A40 Somerset. It was the first car I bought, the first car I drove, the car I learnt to drive (brother and friend were my instructors) in and the car in which I took my one and only car driving test (in 1964).

Ditto. .Mine was grey. BJM 516 bought for £20 and sold three years later for £17 after I'd changed the column change for four-on-the-floor from an A40 Devon. 60's depreciation.

Mine was perhaps unusual as I drove a BMW Isetta on my motorcycle licence, so that was much like a car as regards controls. Had six lessons in a Hillman Minx to get used to the car then took my test and passed first time. First proper car owned was an Austin Cambridge A40.

My first car was a 1952 Ford Popular E93a that my parents bought me when I was 17 to get me off motorbikes.
My test was taken after six lessons in the driving schools HA Viva. Mind you I was out driving 5 or 6 nights a week courtesy of friends who had passed their test.
