Hi,
I have just ordered an E220cdi estate which comes with 245/55/17 alloys. What size winter tyres should I look at getting? I have searched for tha size but can't seem to get any prices. Would it be okay to fit 235/55/17s? Otherwise perhaps a set of 16" alloys for the winter?
Thanks,
Jon

You have a number of choices, all of which are listed in the manual, but the main one is whether or not you will be buying an extra set of wheels or just swapping tyres over.

If you're just going to swap over tyres, then the approved fitment is 245/45 R17 99 H XL MO, which aren't cheap. The other downside is that you'll have to visit the tyre shop twice a year to have the tyres swapped and re-balanced over which will cost you £40 - £50 a time.

If you're going to swap wheels as well, then you can save up to £100 per tyre on premium brands such as Continental & Michelin by going for 16-inch wheels. The approved fitment is then 225/55 R16 99 H XL MO on 8.0 J x 16 H2 ET 46 wheels. This is what I chose to do on my E350CDI saloon and it works very well.

Availability of winter tyres is very limited at this time of year which is why you're having trouble finding prices: you'll need to wait until about October for supplies to be reasily available again. As a benchmark, when I bought mine last year, Continental WinterContact TS830P 225/55 R16 99H MO tyres were approx £125 a pop, fitted, while the same tyres in 245/45 R17 99H MO size were £215 each.

Thanks for the replies. I will start looking for a set of 16" alloys over the next few months.

I would try and get a second set of alloys and fit tyres to them.

Slightly smaller and not as wide tyres. Its then just easier to swap them yourself.

I did this with mine. The 18" and 265's came off and the original 16" alloys with snow tyres went on.

Ok they don't look as good but they serve the purpose. You may find soon as people put the Summers back on more become avialble on e-bay and the like?

Thanks a210. I reckon that there could be load of new winter tyres/ alloys coming on as well. I will just have to find out what alloy sizes that I need.

Hello - this is a question for member 'st13phil' above - but others are also welcome to educate me on the topic. I have recently acquired a 2009 W212 E350CDI Avantgarde. I find that there is a lot of tyre noise when driving on high speeds and also the ride is not as soft/smooth as I would like over anything but newly laid damage free tarmac. The wheels/tyres that are on the car right now are the standard that this model came with i.e. 245/45 R17. I note from your post above that you have fitted 16inch wheels and 225/55 tyres on your E350 CDI Avantgarde. My question to you is have you noticed a reduction in tyre noise and/or any improvement in ride quality after switching down to 16 inch wheels/tyres?? if yes - where can I buy the right 16inch alloy for this car and the right tyres to achieve my objective of lower tyre noise and improved ride quality. Many thanks:)
