Why buy new diesel cars?

Wrong again, Clinton won the popular vote by two million, Trump won the electoral college votes.
You're correct. I made a mistake. I'm always prepared to admit when I'm wrong, it happens (except in my fuel choices ;)). When you say "Wrong again", is that your assessment based on not agreeing with something I've said so I must be wrong? For instance I seem to remember that you said you see nothing wrong with using your phone when driving, whilst I had said it's unsafe (based on studies). So in your opinion I was wrong? And I think we disagreed on Brexit, so again I was wrong was I?

Americans won't buy diesels, its hard enough getting them to accept petrol engines that aren't v8.
So Americans have more sense than I thought then ;)

...petrol is so cheap, they don't need to consider mpg

Some will argue that this is proof that when fuel prices are low and MPG is not an issue [American] consumers choose petrol over diesel.

1) It's the government's fault, they made/encouraged us to buy diesel. So all these respondents do everything the government tells them without question do they? The government says we must not break speed limits, so of course these people never do. I'm pretty sure that the real answer is that it suited them to go for an option that appeared to make more financial sense. That's completely fair enough and I don't blame them, but just admit it and stop blaming the government.

The logic is flawed here. You suggest that following the governments advice/encouragement isn't a justification for our actions, by extension this must mean that you don't think we have to follow government advise... You propose a lawless act as you will society, or do we have some subjective test as to which of the governments policies we should follow. We're heading into the fiasco that is tax avoidance is bad here. Well there are some taxes that its OK to avoid paying and taxes that we can perfectly legally avoid paying but its wrong...

Yes I drive a diesel, yes I'd like to drive a cleaner car, yes I'd buy a petrol if I could afford to run one. Yes If I were shopping for a new W213 had £40k and there were a suitable petrol in the mix I'd buy one. Unfortunately I don't have £40k, nowhere near and unless the lotto numbers come up I never will so I make the best choices I can given limitations.

Americans are a bit less keen on V8s, big old SUVs that do 9mpg are falling out of favour.

If you remove F150s from the equation, US sales are dominated by Korean and Japanese cars with 4 pot engines.

Apologies accepted. More gullible punters in Europe to fall for all the hype presumably. After all, if Mercedes thought that diesel s-classes were so good, wouldn't they have at least offered them for sale in China and the USA? Not a serious question, they'll only try to sell what they think people will want to buy.

Choosing a diesel doesn't make you gullible

The only diesels offered were from VW, and those are being recalled and off to the shredder.

Even American vans run on petrol, pretty well all auto too.

Thinking about it, perhaps I responded too soon with an admission of being wrong. I said that a popular vote elected Trump. I didn't say that the MOST popular vote elected Trump. Over 61 million voted for Trump, that's quite popular in my book. Even more popular than diesels in the UK;)

So either Americans are all idiots, or petrol is better.

You're wrong in the assumption that anyone who is of a different opinion to yourself is either a child killer (in the case of driving a diesel) or a dumb xenophobe (if they voted Brexit.)

I try not to judge other people's choices in life and I've always found the most vociferous critics are those who should be biting their lip, let he without sin cast the first stone and all that...

All cars should be banned from the roads , in 2014 about 1,775 people were killed and over 22,000 were seriously injured on UK roads.

There isn't one reported incident of a driver texting, drinking and playing a banjo simultaneously so this is proof that it's 100% safe. I know how I'm driving from now on. I'm taking no chances. :D

Thank you for proving my theory about you as correct.

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
