Yet another perfomance question 300CE24v sorry

Hmmmmm

I'm liking that idea ....

Are all the 124 diffs interchangeable ? 230ce to 300ce etc ?

Watch the fuel consumption though, engine will rev higher for the same road speed.

Offers still open Captain. I might even try to crank it right up to +50bhp to impress your "customizer" !

What offer is that Maggot ..... ;)

My thoughts on the turbo conversion.

If you are going to turbocharge it then it needs to be done properly, get the turbos working hard, none of this half a bar rubbish. This would need a compression ratio of about 9:1, you'll see extra power and torque and it'll be a fantastic drive.

You then have heat issues to deal with, engine bay ventilation, higher coolant temps, oil temps etc etc. These are what will cause headaches, everything else is off the shelf.

Unless you want silly power which is pointless for 0-60 then Nitrous is the way to go, A friend of mine installs it for a living, about £750 will have a drive in drive out wet sstem fitted and your engine should be good for at the very least 100hp. You don't get the same cooling issues, it's removable and despite the fact you are having to refill a bottle every few weeks or months it isn't that expensive to use. Also, it's putting the engine under less stress in general driving.

I see on a lot of forums people doing home made turbo conversions, some seem to work out ok, others do it just for the challenege, i've never seen one that i'd even consider having on my own engine though, there is a fine line between a bodge and a decent installation.

Dave!

Thats between me and the Captain, although I'm sure his mum must have told him never to accept a lift from a stranger

Does you car have a cat? If it does removing it will add about 13bhp. Not much but a nice easy mod.
A V8 in the coupe would be too heavy up front.
Twin turbo or nitrous is the way to go.

Ian Walker are you reading this.

The mercedes V8 is "the" way to go. It is however a major re-engineering job as has been stated already. The w124 chassis was not designed for V8 engines since with escalating world oil prices in the 70s, and increasingly strict emission controls it was envisaged only straight 4s and 6s would be used in the final powertrain. V8s CAN be made to fit. AMG and MB both did it in the search for more power, but not easy. Getting the engine in isnt a problem but the exhausts, steering gear and larger transmissions can be. I have been monitoring this site for ages and HALLELUJAH they have finally posted some pics.

I don't know what they are doing (other than Grobers explanation) , but it sure looks complicated ....

There has been an M117 V8 powered Merc rumbling around sunny Southampton for some time now. V8 engine and 'box mated to standard e320 running gear and exhaust. 500TE anyone ?

Will be doing some filming of an AMG 3.6 Supercharged 190E this weekend and if the estate shows up I'll try and get some pics of that aswell.

V8 conversion for simplicity and because its a V8, turbo for outright power, head slapping and bank balance emptying !

This is the 190 with a 3.6 amg supercharged lump in it, drool.......

Is there any space for the radiator? or has that been squeezed in underneath?

Radiator is located in front of the engine, where it normally is ;)

Sorry, I know the engine bay on that car looks more cramped than my car.

Thanks Nav. Just shows why I havent really got the bottle to say drop a turbo into my car yet.
