As the trusty 124 marches on @ 227K now I was wondering what the life of the Timing chain was & or the Tensioner. Should I be considering renewal? The Engine does have a rattle, especially cold

Hi guys. I just purchased a 2005 slk 200 kompresor , what an awesome vehicle , but have since been warned about the timing chains going . Is this true ? And if so what if anything can be done to prevent this. Or should they be replaced at a certain point.
Thanx
Steve

Just looking for some info on the timing marks for a OM605 engine.
I have the crank at 0, the two marks on the cams across from each other so the pin fits it. However the engine locks up when trying the turn it by hand?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Hi guys, having read a number of posts regarding timing chains, there seems to be some ambiguity as to when,or if indeed ever it is necessary to change the chain.Having had vehicles in the past with cam belts that have snapped and having to deal with bent valves etc makes me slightly nervous...
Apologies if this has been asked a million times but how do you check the timing chain stretch on this engine? If it needs changing, is it relatively easy to do using a chain and a split link?
thanks
