Hi all,
First post so go easy, it's a 1986 190D the gears all behave until the box changes into 4th gear at which point it jumps out  , will changing the oil/filter cure this or is a gearbox strip on the cards.
Does anybody know what the likely cost of the repair to the box would be, thanks in advance vdubs. :bannana:

You're doing the right thing changing the ATF first, but do you want the bad news or the bad news.

Hi Dieselman,
I'am sitting down you can hit me with the bad news : :D , i've got a nasty feeling i could be wasting my time changing the fluid and filter.
I look forward to your reply
vdubs  :D :) :) :)

Sorry for the delay, I've been in hospital.

The bad news is that 4th is always the first gear to go and usually indicates a well worn box.

Hi Dieselman, sorry to hear of your hospital visit.
Could you or anyone else tell me whether it's a DIY job or is it better to go for an exchange autobox.
If exchange is the way to go, what is the cost likely to be, and has anyone got the address/ phone number of a good reconditioner in the midlands (Warwickshire) area.
Just out of interest are special tools needed if i did attempt the job myself,

Gearless ;) vdubs

Probable cause sealing rings broken on 4th gear clutch drum.box must come out to change
