Anyone seen any good number plates on cars lately?

agents provocateurs...

I suppose they stop short of entrapment, which the courts have ruled to be unlawful. I remember reading a Court of Appeal judgement once that went something like:
It is quite unreasonable for a servant of the Crown to encourage a citizen to break the law and then seek to prosecute him for doing so.
Made me smile, anyway. You can have faith in our courts...

But when you ring them up they do ALWAYS tell you that it is illegal to alter them.

Is it wrong for them to charge more for the ones that idiots will misspace? If same idiots are willing to pay more then why not take their money?

Mercedes charge more for cars that go faster even though the cheapest car they make will exceed this countries limit by quite a way.

You speed it's your fault if you get caught. Same with number plates in my opinion. If you are stupid enough to misspace and get caught it's nobodys fault but your own.

Too many people these days that want to blame somebody else for their own stupidity.

You just need to check back through this thread to see how many people post numbers and what they think the actual number was. The registration plate is a vehicle identifier, nothing more. If you want to tell people your name get a sunstrip with it on. If you want them to know what sort of car you drive the manufacturers normally do a nice line in badges with the model on them.

And yes I do have a private plate on my car and no it's not misrepresented in any way.

[/rant]

I have to say I find it quite disingenuous of the DVLA to sell cherished plates the way they do, pricing them because of what they can spell out, though it is illegal to display them on the car in this way.

Have you bought a plate from the DVLA? I got one recently, and in addition to all the normal threats and warnings about mis-spacing or altering the appearance in any way I also had to explain the meaning of the registration (a standard-format 07 one). They even queried this, because the first two letters didn't match what they thought my initials should be (I'm known by my 2nd name)!!

A911 CAB....

I often wondered if the old dear driving it had a clue about how much money that plate could bring. Should have made her an offer for the car. ;)

Some one obviously did....

I've just had a look at some of the numbers the DVLA are about to auction DES 551E DUS11Y Surely these numbers have no significance whatsover unless you alter them to somehow represent a name? Why has the DVLA put a premium on them? To me the DVLA should issue registration numbers and not get involved in putting a premium on dodgy combinations.

Yes our fleet all have personal plates, and all purchased for a fixed basic price from the DVLA

As this thread is about 100 miles long now,

How about only having replies that include a photo of the plate?

You don't need MMS, just a PC (USB) cable for your phone. Then you can copy the pics. straight to your computer (as well as other useful stuff like backing up your phone book entries etc.).

Hmmmm

Haven't got one of those either .....
