Best snow foam ?

cant see that this snow foam works any better than a normal soaking with anything else. I think it's in peoples head that foam is a good thing well its not i doubt. look at low foam dish washer powder and low suds washing powder. Its just a gimmick.

Tony you ask how its applied which suggests you have never used it or seen it used.
Despite that you make negative comments - based on what ?
There are pros and cons of snowfoam but dont just dismiss it as a gimmick. All professional detailers use it and they are not in business to waste money.

Hi Richard and based on physics its far better to have the solution sprayed directly to the paintwork. Bubbles can't possibly be the way to go. most of it by seeing video's ends up on the floor any way. Our local detailer realizes this and uses a garden sprayer to put the solution on. Leaves it for 5 min's then jet washes it off.

The small bubbles in Bilt Hamber actually do some of the work.

"auto-foam is made with biodegradable compounds, is extraordinarily tough on soil and grime, yet harmless to paint, its non-caustic formulation ensures that even with regular use will not attack paint binders. Our hard working surfactants will attack and penetrate the hardest of road dirt and grime without the need for manual intervention. During the panel dwell period, auto-foam’s bubbles will systematically burst and move, encouraging our soaking and cleansing agents to start working."

How come your local detailer uses snow foam in any form if it doesn't work?

If most of it runs off then its going on too thin. The point of the bubbles is to create movement within the foam to start to ease off the dirt.

Just recently bought a foam lance and used it with Chemical Guys Mr Pink shampoo and give it 10/10!

I bought an AutoBright lance and enough Magifoam to last me a lifetime as part of a special offer on another forum.

It works for me - any prewash that means less risk of scratching is all good in my book.

I can help you here as surfactants are in my area of chemical expertise as they are used extensively in Mining and oilfield as well as personal and home care products and of course car detailing products.

The reason for applying as a foam is to get residence time (dwell time) on the car so the surfactants stay clinging to the paintwork doing their pre wash duty. However this is NOT the optimum method for applying surfactants. Many people do indeed use garden sprayers but get the dilution wrong so it simply runs off the car and does not do its job, but if you get the viscosity correct so it still clings to the car it gives a far more concentrated layer on the paint and does a more in depth job. With most quality products you need to have a solution strength around 4% - 5% but could possibly push this a little higher but after 7% you will definitely start to strip wax or whatever LSP you are using.

Surfactant technology has moved on massively so there is no need for the foaming variety except in a very limited number of applications, In fact R&D over the last 5 years has been focussed on stopping foaming in surfactants so without shadow of a doubt in a few years time snowfoam will be obsolete because there will be no demand for the base surfactants in it. There are some really good non foaming pre washes out there already with high powered neutral surfactants not cheap but do an extremely good job.

Great reply - thanks
Snowfoam is still fun though ! It does have the advantage of not stripping wax by using too strong a mix as well I think

Snow foam is good fun I agree but I don't think my neighbours were impressed when it was whipped up by the wind and deposited on their cars and garden

I'm currently using Chemical guys bug bugger or Poorboys Bug squash both good this time of year for all the dead insect and bird carp just dissolves them straight off. Used from a garden sprayer with great effect.

Flango, what would you use as a pre-wash instead of snow foam ?
Preferably something that can be applied using a spray bottle.

Try Valet Pro Citrus Pre Wash...good value, can be applied via pump sprayer, smells lovely, great dilution and can be used I think from memory on interior as well.

I was seduced by the advertising for Demon Snow Foam (principally because it attaches to an ordinary hose rather than a pressure washer, which I would never use on any car) so I bought some. It works beautifully. Can't recommend it highly enough.

My considerations are for cleaning the car, not creating a scene from 'The Chuckle Brothers'.

This is my concern with snow foam - the sides of my drive slope down to the road and I don't want to be spending overtime cleaning up.

I think snow foams are just a placebo effect gimmick, I used Valet Pro on my Saphire black BMW , was never impressed with the results, then I tried Valet Pro Citrus pre Wash, another overpriced gimmicky product, I now use this from Screwfix which is better IMHO at a third of the price of the above :thumb:

Rubbish, unless my car is especially dirty, I no longer use a sponge or any type of hand wash. I just spray it with snow foam, leave for 10 minutes & rinse off. It gleams like new every time, so how can you call snow foam a placebo or gimmick?

Is your paintwork sealed Russ?
