"Brutus" the e55k Project

Gav, are those wheels the correct size for an E55 (i.e. staggered)?

The rears always look too slim or the wrong offset to me.

Definitely the wrong offset at a minimum. Brilliant job on the car, wheels not so much!:wallbash:

Yes bud Staggered, But they are "9j i think" not 9.5 Dont forget she is on links tyre size 265/35/18 from memory.

It's what i had to work with bud and pretty please with them, especially after they horrendous stretch tyre'd rims that were on there.

Wobbles and Bearings!

Well some of you may have seen my latest question trying to get to the end of the Steering wobble ive had over the past month.

This has lead me to Replace Everything on the front end again including the Nsf top ball joint which i'd over tightened,I had to anglegrind the nut off and replace with new, the correct torque btw is 20nms.

The front end work also showed up the the need for new Bearings, I had previously adjusted these but one was making noises so despite no play i decided to replace both.

They were replaced with SKF bearings, and the stub axle was also cleaned along with the back plate "again" lol alone with everything else.

Excuse the image of wood in the caliper, I dont trust the sbc pump lol so its a precaution , i dont want tobe replacing Pistion in brembos doh.....

Face of the Hubs nice a clean free from rust/debris to keep everything even.

I had a friend who owns a Garage remove the Bearings from the hubs as the new ones have to be pressed in, One put up abit of a fight coming out so im glad he had the right tools lol

This is the Stub axle all ready togo

I also had noted that at aprox 60mph the gear lever would also wobble slightly, This was down to the front Prop Flex disc, Which i also replaced with the correct FEBI parts. Worked a treat.

I'm going to take some more pics shortly over the next few days showing the exact cause and differences in Plastic Spigot rings and Alloy spigot rings along with the Enlarge centre bore of the Aftermarket wheels which has caused all the hassle expense and grief.

Needless to say Brutus is Now Smooth as silk and really does drive like new, It's certainly tested my patience.

Bad luck Gavin, just when you thought that green beast was nearly finished all this crops up,Forth Road Bridge springs to mind, absolute pain about the wheels, are just the fronts affected or all of them.

Yes tell me about, Ive had a right run of bad luck, Turned this car right around only to have suffered this :(

It has as far as i can tell only effected the Fronts, I don't seem to have any vibration or shaking from the rear.

I've sent a "sales of good act letter to Wheebase Alloys as the wheels are only 6 months old, But im not holding out much hope.

In the mean time im on the look out for some 2nd Hand Oe ones 18" of course.

I've just spent the last 1.5 hours in work reading the full thread. Some great work going on here.

Are these E63 wheels you have? (I need these) :D

1.5 hours looking at this thread,I will stop your wages :D It is a shame Gavin has spent many hours getting the green beast absolutely right,he has had a few upsets, but this last one when you believe the car is nearly the way you want it is a big kick in the N--Ts,he even missed Benz on the Green, one thing I am certain of he will get the wheel problem sorted and be at the next on the green meeting .

So is it the non-OEM rims that caused you grief mate? :(

Yes it was the 2 front wheels that have suffered wear, They have worn 2mm i know this because ive had to buy 2x 75mm spacers with the mb bore size of 66.6. The Hub size is fine, The hubs have not worn, Only the Outta size 73.1-75mm over 3,000 miles of the wheels.

There rear wheels appear fine. Wheelbase Alloys are not entertaining "Sales of goods act", This is probably due to it being 4 days older than 6 months, If id had looked at the wheels 1st before renewing "AGAIN" all the front suspension id had probably been in time and i could despute with my credit card. One thing to note, is Polished Rims from them only come with 6mth warranty "humm" convenient.

It looks like its down to me to prove that the wheels are not fit for purpose which going on spigot size is obvious. Crap Alloy.

Im never ever buying from that Shower ever again. I sell New vehicle parts and i abide by the law, Doesn't seem others companies do.

I'm now going to have to save a few pennies so i can get some Genuine Mb wheels, Hopefully the wheels will last out until i can get some, The car has certainly eaten the pennies, the Spreadsheet and folder of Bills is interesting reading lol

lol Luckily I pay the wages! I've taken a keen interest in this car. It's the same colour as mine. Impressed with the work that's gone into it!

Thankyou peeps for the kind words, If somethings not right it bug's the  out of me, so it has to get sorted.

Drives the wife up the wall, And yes i chose these as they are similar in design to the 63 wheels bud

sry to hear about the wheels mate, i`ll keep a look out for some oem 18`s, try and go for the E63 ones as they look a little more modern

Yes Alex, im gutted and Skint £839 down the drain in 6months Just on the wheels.

Gutted for you mate as the wheels look just right on the car.

So if I understand your other message basically the hubs on the back of the front wheels have worn? I'm surprised they don't have a 12 month warranty by default. Assuming you were sold them as 'the correct figment'?!

Yes thats correct, and because the have a polished Rim, Wheelbase say they only have a 6 month waranty,

Sorry to hear about this Gav, buying aftermarket wheels is such a minefield and sadly you've been stung.

WHEELBASE ALLOYS sound like a bunch of shysters; first selling you poor quality wheels and secondly for not honouring any returns.

I'm pretty sure that would only cover the finish not the structure of the rims so to sneak. Cheeky bar stewards!

Might be worth a chat with Trading Standards on that one mate. See what they say.
