I just had the same problem with my E240 - After using kickdwon when getting to the red would just rev like hell and not change back down.
A few days later (and it was almost OK but not quite right) it locked into the one gear and 'safe' or 'get you home' mode.
Its been at the garage and they were pretty sure it was the gearbox control plate which measures engine revs and gearbox speeds. Like a printed circuit board.
On the E240 (1998) has cost me about £500 for the part plus labour and a full gearbox oil and filter change. This is what the computer told them and has had a mini road test and so far touchwood seems OK to the garage. They give it a long test Tomorrow.
