C55 to CLS55 "cross"grade ..

Chris, the door handles are approx £180 painted in the colour of choice. Front ones are a doddle to fit. I have changed one on mine so far.

So i decided im going to give up some extras for a low miler, thats when i saw my one it done 61k balck with beige interior.. and guess what its got command sat sav, adaptive xenons, heated seats, rear sensors (front are £200 to fit professionally) memory seats, lingo thing (quiet handy when driving). What im trying to get at is you hardly use the extras.

Looks like I need to correct myself on saying Parktronic is standard then as it only comes as front and back!

One oddity that definitely is standard only on the 55 is the auto dim rear view mirror!

Thanks, they (MB) recon that is why the keyless go and sometimes keyless entry dont work - bad door handles. I'm no mechanic, but my door handles are fine, surely its an electrical problem or basically a fault code? Again I don't use either function so its not a big issue for me, although I'd like my car to be as perfect as possible.

MB seem fine when it comes to the smaller things, quite cheap actually, but they are batty when it comes to other stuff.

I'll seek the advice of my indi specialist over in Dunston Gateshead, he is always busy though!

Would that be Peter at MB Staithes in Dunston? Believe it or not Chris, it will be the door handles! The little black square on the handle which is a rubber button of sorts, covers a microswitch which controls the keyless entry. These are prone to failure due to water ingress. Unfortunately you cannot buy the micro switch separately (wouldn't be that easy would it!) so have to replace the handle itself.
I on the other hand use my keyless entry and go all the time, infact it annoys me when I get into wifeys ML and have to use that old fashioned method of having to get the key out of my handbag, oops I mean my pocket.

The guy is called Phil I believe, I've been once or twice and he has always been spot on if not stupidly busy which I suppose is a good thing for him and indeed his reputation.

I have noticed that little black button thing on the door handles, a friend of mine suggested when I was having trouble locking the doors from the key to hold the key right below it and low and behold it worked.

So if I just replace them it will work OK? 500 + quid seems excessive for replacing door handles that to the eye seem spot on.

Finally managed to test drive one today. Certainly feels a little longer than the C55 and perhaps a little more refined in the cabin. Power was savage in low gears, but didn't feel much different in 4th/5th. Not a lot of room to play on local roads however!

Example I saw was rather distressed unfortunately - lots of bodywork issues, even interior trim issues. Also electrics were questionable - Dynamic seats appeared not to work, electric boot didn't work from inside (though did close itself from the outside if you pressed the boot button), stereo seemed to have a problem with the volume button where it "didn't work much" .. actually couldn't turn it down to no sound, A/C seemed not to work well. On top of that a noisy de-cat, shabby front splitter and peeling window tints.

To be fair, they were happy to address the issues, but it's a lot and to me shows a very unloved car with some poor modding choices.

Bide your time... There are 2 black ones on eBay , you have probably seen them, one has ultra low miles but a price tag that shows it!

Yep .. it was the other black one I saw ;) Which was MORE expensive as it goes!

Question on Airmatic - I pressed the button and I think it moved about 1cm (barely perceptible!). Is that to be expected? Not used it before so not really sure if just pressing that one button is what you're meant to do or in conjunction with a Sport mode ..?

As far as I'm aware sports 1 lowers, sports 2 lowers and stiffens dampers .. I certainly notice a difference in sports 2, not so in sports 1

Generally the Cls lowers and adapts the ride as you go faster. Wait for the right one mate.

Ride levels change as below. .

AIRmatic%20levels_zpssgj8pxp4.jpg

"The "adaptive damping system" (ADSII) adapts the damping forces to the road surface condition and driving style or driver's wishes. The road conditions are determined by vertical acceleration pickups at the body of the vehicle. The driving style is calculated from the vehicle speed and the
steering angle. As the speed increases and the driving style becomes sportier the damping is automatically adjusted to a harder damping characteristic. Compared to a passive system with conventional dampers the vehicle body motion is cut down noticeably."

So at rest, it will drop 1cm, followed by 0.5cm more while progressing through Sports modes. Alternatively, pressing the other button makes it jump up 2.5cm.

Presumably one cancels the other, so putting in Sport II, then pressing the other button should see it raise 4cm? And vice-versa ..

This all came about with me wanting to just eyeball that it worked ;)

When the car is locked the system 'rests' by lowering slightly after leveling the car. Noticed this as when it rains the drops always run off equally from the roof centre. All very clever..

Sport 1 & 2 don't lower the car, only stiffen up the suspension as mentioned above.

If you want it lower, get it on STAR

According to the info posted pressing Sport 1 forces the drop by 10mm and pressing again to Sport 2 forces a drop to 15mm. The car will automatically lower to these levels as speed increases anyway but the driver can dial in the drop as and when he wishes by using the Sport 1/2 settings.

Suspension stiffens up automatically with driving style and speed, the driver can force the speed by which these changes happen by selecting Sport 1 or 2.

TBH I find it quite hard to tell the difference between the modes. Even in Comfort (or Normal) setting the car will stiffen up nicely when I push hard into corners or take the twisty bits with enthusiasm. Using Sport 1 or 2 on our potholed UK roads (as opposed to the billiard table smooth roads of Baden-Württemberg) really unsettles the ride and makes rapid progress less surefooted IMHO

But as Karl says, if you want to lower the overall stance of the car get in on STAR to recalibrate the ride height (or for more extreme lowering, use lowering links or something more sophisticated like the Renntech system)

Why does the grille look different in that one ?
