C63 507 Caught Fire!!!

Possibly oil on the Cat or a petrol leak. Oil on the Cat would be my best guess.

Or ATF. I recall reading (somewhere...) a couple of years ago of a C63 lighting up thanks to ATF being sprayed onto cat/exhaust

Had you noticed any smoke previously or fluids underneath the car ?

I was very concerned about something similar happening to my c63 shortly after I took delivery of it. Oil was leaking into the exhaust as a result of a faulty seal. Apparently it is a known problem.

Sorry it came to this for you - good luck with the follow up.

Never noticed anything before, it just happened all of a sudden when I slowed down to reverse the car onto the drive.
The fireman said the same thing we thought that the boot had came off or split and the grease caught fire.

Legally MB have the right to either repair and fix or replace outright.
You could argue you have lost faith in said car and want full refund. Latter option would probably go through civil courts.

What do you base these statements on?

6 months old, i would aim for a replacement.

sorry to hear about your bad luck, hope it gets sorted soon, until then, put the milage on their cars and try and get something better if its going to drag on...

That reminds me, I need to buy another fire extinguisher after mine got nicked at a campsite !

Im not sure where I stand legally.....will need to speak to someone.
The way im looking at it......the problem occured due to a manufacturers defect or due to the workmanship when I had car repaired at MB Birmingham.

I got the car from Manchester and have instructed Mercedes that i want the car returned there for investigation and not Birmingham.

Just to clarify a neighbour took the pictures....I was in the car when it fireballed and jumped out. There must have been around eight people helping with hoses and buckets of water, we initially tried to contain the fire by using hoses through the wheel arch, vents etc and then had the courage to lift the bonnet up and from there we had plenty of water to contain fire. Thank god for some good old community spirit!!

Yeah lessons learnt:

Keep a fire extinguisher
Bottle of water in car
And paper liscense with me in my wallet (I couldnt get courtesy car as I didnt have paper liscense with me and DVLA are shut at w/ends so need to wait till tomorrow to get courtesy car)

Six years at law school...must have had to repeat a couple of years!:dk:

Life's too short , let them repair it and get out and enjoy the car !
