After a decent clean with Autosol , wipe over with Isopropyl alcohol I brushed some silver Hammerite Smooth finish onto the pitted area, left a few minutes and wiped off the excess.

The one on the right has been painted. There is a slight difference where the paint has got into the pitted area but it’s negligible, I struggled to see the difference 🧐 Having had a feel around the it seams the tips are tack welded in more than one area. Unless anyone knows something contrary it looks as though we will just have to live with the damage , changing the whole back box looks like the only way to replace the exhaust tips which I would imagine is going to be EXPENSIVE ☹️

I dont know why they were chromed, my R32 has stainless tips and they always look new with very little elbow work. And that’s 11 years older than the mercedes and a VW...

Mine has some light pitting but only on the underside. I’ve had some luck so far with using ‘The Pink Stuff’. I’ll get some pictures, very much like autosol but a lot more aggressive.

I‘ve come to the conclusion that once the exhaust gases have eaten into the chrome and caused the pitting their is nothing short of replacing them that can be done. Stainless steel would have been great and easy to polish 👍. It’s annoying as aftermarket exhausts often come with a choice of tips which are easily changed ☹️

Ouch 😱 I’m not surprised at that price Andy. It looks like it’s one of those issues we just have to live with, unless anyone has a cost effective solution 🤔

Not exactly “cost effective” but with the Remus cat back exhaust you get two sets of interchangeable exhaust tips , one stainless one Carbon/stainless. I still prefer the OEM oval tips 👍

Afraid the tips can't be replaced separately from the exhaust. I was fortunate to get my exhaust replaced under Warranty as the pitting was pretty bad. Just need to try and keep it like that now :D

What are folk using on the leather in their W204 C63 to keep the leather in good condition and maintain the slightly matt OEM finish 🤔. I’m nearly to the bottom of the Zymol which came in a bundle when I bought a Zymol kit for a Morgan I had over 12 years ago so it’s lasted a decent amount of time 👍
I use the Gliptone stuff. Doesn't make the leather shiny or sticky.

Thanks Phil. I want to maintain the “Matt” oem finish on the leather 👍

Phil. I was coming to the conclusion that the only way to sort the tips is a new exhaust. Good result on getting a new exhaust under warranty. The reality is the tips need cleaning very frequently, probably at least once a week to stop the rot setting in ☹️

Andy, why not find a good metalworker who could separate the tips and refit them after your restoration. You could easily come up with a fitment so they could easily be removed in future. £150?

hey guys, The tips are spot welded on, if you take the silencer off you can see them, they can be removed with a reciprocating saw, and allow you to get them re chromed. Re fitting would be simple enough to weld a captive nut on the inside of the cover, so that when you re fit them they can be removed easy enough.
once fully restored KKD R Evolve will help maintain them, this is serious stuff, as it doesn't brake down with heat it actually gets harder, i have it on my calipers. Brake hubs, exhaust tips, only downside is that you can't use it on anything that has powder coating on as its too strong.

Andy,Colour lock do a great refresh kit too, i bought the kit with the colour code paint, cleaner and protector, its really good stuff buddy, if you haven't already bought something i would seriously recommend you take a look

I pressed the button on the GT11 which Phil recommended , but thanks for the tip. 👍

Sounds like we need a “Pioneer” on this one and a “How to” write up , any volunteers 🤔😊
